Fans split as Quinta Brunson to voice Betty Boop in new film

The Excitement and Controversy Surrounding the New Betty Boop Film

Fans of classic animation are buzzing with excitement and debate after it was announced that an upcoming film featuring Betty Boop is in development. This new project will see the iconic character brought to life by Quinta Brunson, a 36-year-old actress known for her Emmy-winning role in Abbott Elementary. The film is being developed in collaboration with Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Max Fleischer, who originally created Betty Boop.

Betty Boop first appeared in the Talkartoon series in 1930, designed by Grim Natwick at the request of Max Fleischer. The character quickly became a symbol of the Jazz Age, embodying the spirit of flappers with her charm, wit, and sassiness. Over the decades, she has remained a beloved figure in pop culture, though often seen as a “niche” icon.

Brunson expressed her admiration for Betty Boop’s legacy, stating in a statement: “Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche.” She also shared that meeting with Fleischer’s grandson revealed a deeper story to tell — one that could be explored in a way that feels fresh, subversive, and timeless.

Mark Fleischer described his reaction to the project as “breathtaken,” particularly by the concept of a film focusing on the relationship between his grandfather, Max Fleischer, and his creation, Betty Boop. He noted that Brunson’s portrayal of the character “embodies Betty’s love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness, and compassion.”

The film’s premise will explore the origin and evolution of Betty Boop from Max Fleischer’s perspective. It will also delve into the complex relationship between the artist and his creation, especially as the character begins to take on a life of its own. This dynamic is expected to provide a unique lens through which to view the birth of one of the world’s first animated icons.

Social Media Reactions: A Mixed Response

As news of the film spread, social media platforms like X were flooded with reactions. Some fans were skeptical, with one user writing, “Another movie to skip. No need to revive this character.” Another commented, “I’m sure this will go over well.” A fan added, “This isn’t about race. It’s about whether a live-action Betty Boop should exist at all. Some characters are cartoons for a reason.”

However, not all responses were negative. Many praised Brunson’s casting, calling it “perfect.” One fan wrote, “This is going to be really interesting — a modern take on an iconic character.” Another said, “Love this casting choice! She’s so expressive and has such a cute disposition. Perfect for Betty.”

Some users also appreciated the involvement of Fleischer’s grandson, noting that it gives hope the film won’t feel like a “lazy reboot.” One fan remarked, “Quinta’s got the charisma, comedic timing, and creativity to make a classic character feel fresh without losing the original charm.”

Despite the mixed reactions, the project has sparked renewed interest in Betty Boop. The character made her debut in the Talkartoon series in 1930, initially voiced by Margie Hines. Over the years, other notable voices have included Mae Questel, Ann Rothschild, Bonnie Poe, and Cindy Robinson.

Betty Boop appeared in around 127 theatrical cartoons from 1930 to 1939. In 2019, Boop! The Musical hit Broadway, with Jasmine Amy Rogers playing the role of Betty Boop. The character was later ranked among TV Guide’s 50 greatest cartoon characters of all time in 2002.

In January 2024, Betty Boop officially entered the public domain, opening the door for new interpretations and adaptations. The film is being developed by Fleischer Studios and Fifth Chance, with Erin Wehrenberg, head of creative affairs at Fifth Chance, also involved.

Brunson shared the news on her Instagram page, writing, “Excited to bring this story to life #bettyboop.”

Further casting details and a release date have yet to be announced, but the anticipation continues to grow. Whether this new adaptation will capture the essence of Betty Boop or fall short of expectations remains to be seen.
