Queensland Reds Secure Crucial Victory Over Moana Pasifika
In a thrilling encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Queensland Reds managed to secure a narrow 33-31 victory over Moana Pasifika. The win not only solidified their position in the Super Rugby finals but also marked a significant moment for the Moana team as it was their final home game before they exit the competition.
Jock Campbell’s try in the 79th minute, converted by Ben Volavola, proved to be the decisive moment that broke the hearts of Moana Pasifika supporters. This came after the Reds had built an early lead of 26-7 in the second half, only for the wooden spooners to make a fierce comeback in search of their second win of the season.
The match saw a dramatic shift when Joe Brial received a yellow card, and a Moana penalty try added to the tension. Israel Leota, an ex-Brisbane Broncos player, scored a stunning runaway try that energized the small but passionate fanbase at North Harbour Stadium.
Despite the challenges, the Reds managed to hold their nerve, with Josh Flook and Campbell playing pivotal roles in securing the win. The victory was crucial for the sixth-placed Queensland team, who now have all but locked up their finals berth with one round remaining. This also effectively ended the NSW Waratahs’ faint hopes of making the playoffs.
Key Players Shine in the Match
The Reds’ left winger, Tim Ryan, delivered a double performance, while Treyvon Pritchard also made a significant impact with another impressive display of skill. Pritchard, a rising star in Australian rugby, has been drawing attention from various teams, including the PNG Chiefs. His talent is evident, even when he faces limited space on the field.
Treyvon Pritchard’s ability to create opportunities despite tight situations has caught the eye of commentators and fans alike. “He’s so hard to stop,” remarked commentator Jeff McTainsh. His performances have highlighted his potential as a future star in the sport.
Ex-All Blacks star Aaron Cruden also praised Pritchard’s efforts. “Two career tries and he’s done it in about the space of half a metre for both of them. A couple of weeks ago against the Chiefs and here we go again. Not much room to work with but a fantastic finish.”

Reds captain Fraser McReight expressed his relief after the match. “What an awesome atmosphere here,” he said. “We had the privilege of obviously playing their last home game and I thought the crowd was phenomenal. That first 45 minutes we were exceptional – even though we had some really poor execution – but we were able to get some points.”
McReight acknowledged the difficulty of facing Moana Pasifika when they are at their best. “It took us right to the very end to sort of claw that one back. Their hearts are broken, we’re relieved but just a great game of footy and a great atmosphere.”
Looking Ahead
The Reds will face the Drua in Brisbane for their final regular-season match. Coach Les Kiss emphasized the importance of maintaining composure during critical moments. “We held our nerve when we had to. When we had play big, we did and that was the pleasing part.”
Moana Pasifika will conclude their season with a match against the ACT Brumbies in Canberra. Their coach, Tana Umaga, reflected on the emotional week. “It’s been an emotional week, another tough one with all that’s going on,” he said. “We talked about it earlier in the week – if we’re here, let’s do it well. The last thing we want to do is just peter out at the end.”
