Strong Start for Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Royal Challengers Bengaluru made a powerful start in Qualifier 1, with the dependable duo of Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal delivering yet another fifty-run partnership. Their composed and steady approach helped RCB gain momentum and maintain control after the powerplay, even when the situation seemed uncertain.
Virat Kohli scored 43 before being dismissed, while Padikkal contributed 30 runs. Jason Holder then played a crucial role in bringing Gujarat Titans back into the contest with a remarkable double-wicket over. However, the Titans were unaware of the destructive potential that the RCB captain and middle order were about to unleash.
Momentum Shifts After Key Moments
The game slowed down after two tight overs from Rashid Khan and Holder’s impressive double strike. Despite this, the RCB batters maintained their composure and showed confidence in their ability to change the pace of the game whenever needed.
Rajat Patidar, despite a few wobbles in the 14th over, remained at the crease. His performance against Kulwant Khejroliya was particularly impactful. Khejroliya had already given away boundaries off a no-ball and a free hit, but on the fourth delivery, he overstepped again. This moment marked a turning point in the match.
Patidar took full advantage of the situation, scoring 14 runs from the last three balls and finishing the over with a massive 28 runs. This single over completely shifted the momentum in favor of RCB, signaling the beginning of Patidar’s more aggressive assault in Dharamshala.
Fielding Errors Cost Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans paid a heavy price for their costly mistakes. Their fielding became sloppy after the 10th over, with dropped catches and lackluster movement gradually handing the momentum back to RCB.
For instance, Patidar mistimed the very first ball of the 14th over, but Jos Buttler and Kulwant Khejroliya failed to hold onto the catch despite a strong effort. On the next delivery, Prasidh Krishna created another clear chance. Kagiso Rabada positioned himself well under the ball, lunged forward, but the ball slipped out of his hands, giving Patidar another lifeline when he was only on 21 runs.
Dominance by Rajat Patidar
Once Gujarat Titans missed these critical opportunities, Rajat Patidar took complete control of the match in Dharamshala. After last season’s success, RCB were chasing a second consecutive IPL final appearance, and the fans witnessed a total that will be remembered for years to come, as well as the highest score ever recorded in an IPL playoff.
Alongside Krunal Pandya, Patidar formed a crucial partnership for the fourth wicket. He delivered one of the most aggressive innings of the season, starting with a slow simmer and then quickly shifting into high gear. Patidar scored 71 runs off just 19 balls once he found his rhythm.
With a strike rate of 281.82, including nine sixes and five boundaries, Patidar led RCB to a record-breaking total of 254, the highest ever registered in IPL playoff history.
