Why Gen Z is choosing mushrooms over alcohol at festivals this year

Gen Z is known for being more health-conscious than previous generations, with 28 per cent of them choosing not to drink alcohol at all. However, despite this trend, they still love having fun and enjoying themselves. As festival season approaches, it seems that something unexpected might be taking the place of lukewarm cans of lager for those heading to fields around the world: mushrooms.

No, we’re not talking about the magic kind. The focus here is on Lion’s Mane mushrooms, which have become a popular wellness ingredient in recent years. Their numerous health benefits are now being incorporated into coffees, supplements, and food items. The functional mushroom market was valued at $15.3 billion in 2022 and is expected to surpass $23.3 billion by 2030, marking a significant boom in the industry.

Could these mushrooms be the answer to partying all night long at a festival? According to experts, the answer is yes. With the demands of festivals—carrying heavy bags, walking 30,000 steps a day, and staying energized throughout the event—it’s essential to have energy without compromising on well-being or experiencing hangovers.

Matthew Kelly, founder of Spacegoods, one of the leading brands in the mushroom wellness space, has shared insights on how mushrooms can elevate the festival experience.

Sustained Energy Without Jitters

After five days of partying in a field, most people would say they feel exhausted. While regular coffee can provide a quick energy boost, the jitters that come with it don’t pair well with the high-energy festival atmosphere. Mushroom coffee, on the other hand, offers a smoother and longer-lasting energy boost without the risk of a sudden caffeine crash.

“Traditional coffee often leads to sharp dips in energy, but mushroom coffee has lower caffeine levels, helping to prevent these drops,” Matthew explains. “Adaptogenic mushrooms like lion’s mane, cordyceps, and chaga support steady energy and help regulate the body’s stress response, ensuring you stay alert and energised throughout the festival.”

Boosts Immune System

Festivals can be challenging for the immune system, with long days, unpredictable weather, and close contact with large crowds. Fortunately, mushrooms like chaga and cordyceps offer immune-supporting properties that can help protect against the “festival flu.”

“Chaga is packed with antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, while cordyceps enhances stamina and overall resilience,” Matthew says. “These mushrooms are essential for anyone planning to spend a weekend at a festival, as they help keep you energised and better equipped to handle the busy festival schedule.”

Gentle on the Stomach

Dieting is often the last thing on a festival-goer’s mind. Meals may range from “I’ll worry about it later” to “overpriced burger,” and nutrition is rarely a priority. However, if you want to enjoy yourself without digestive discomfort, mushrooms could be a great option.

“Traditional coffee is highly acidic, which can lead to digestive issues, especially when consumed on an empty stomach,” Matthew notes. “Mushroom blends, especially those containing ingredients like maca root, ashwagandha, and rhodiola rosea, are much gentler on the digestive system. These ingredients support digestion, reduce inflammation, and help the body adapt to stress.”

Balances Stress and Anxiety

Multi-day festivals can be overwhelming and stressful. Adaptogenic ingredients like lion’s mane, cordyceps, and chaga help promote relaxation and balance, keeping you in the perfect festival mindset.

“Lion’s mane supports cognitive function and reduces mental fog, helping you stay present during a busy festival. Cordyceps enhances stamina and resilience, preventing burnout from hours of dancing and socialising. Chaga, rich in antioxidants, helps manage stress and maintain overall well-being,” Matthew explains. “Together, they create a calm yet energised state, allowing you to enjoy every moment without feeling overwhelmed.”
