Battle of the Pace Royalty
One of the most anticipated highlights of this match is the clash between two of the most formidable pace attacks in the tournament. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be relying on their star duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, while the Gujarat Titans (GT) will have their deadly quartet of Kagiso Rabada, Md. Siraj, Jason Holder, and Prasidh Krishna. Both teams have demonstrated exceptional form with their bowling lineups, making this a crucial factor in determining the outcome of the game.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada are currently the top wicket-takers of the tournament, each having taken 24 wickets with impressive averages of 18.5 and 20.5 respectively. Md. Siraj has also been consistent, taking 17 wickets this season. On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood has had an inconsistent season, managing just 12 wickets at an average of 34.83.
In the GT camp, Prasidh Krishna and Jason Holder have been effective as well, with Krishna taking 14 wickets in 9 matches and Holder picking up 13 wickets in 7 games. While Krishna has been expensive, Holder has been economical, giving away only 6.87 runs per over. His ability to take wickets in the middle overs makes him a key player for GT.
Top 3 Dependent GT
Gujarat Titans’ top order has been the backbone of their success this season, much like last year. The trio of Sai Sudharshan, Jos Buttler, and skipper Shubman Gill has accounted for over 70% of the team’s total runs. Sai Sudharshan and Shubman Gill are the leading run-getters of the season, scoring 638 and 616 runs respectively. Their cautious yet calculated approach has made them difficult to dismiss.
However, the middle and lower order of GT has been a concern. They have struggled when losing early wickets, as there are no big names or experienced T20 players in their batting lineup after the top three. This is an area where RCB can exploit and gain an advantage.
The Dilemma of Venky-Salt
Phil Salt, who played a pivotal role in RCB’s title win last year, has been sidelined due to a finger injury. He has recently returned to the squad but is not fully fit yet. Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer has been in excellent form, scoring 73* off 40 balls against PBKS and 44 off 19 balls against SRH. His performance in the playoffs has been outstanding, with four 50s in five innings.
Venkatesh Iyer’s record in the playoffs makes it unlikely that he will be benched. However, there is uncertainty about whether Phil Salt will play tonight. If he does, Venkatesh Iyer might need to be adjusted down the order. The responsibility of finishing the innings will fall on Jitesh Sharma and Tim David.
Threat of Rashid
Rashid Khan has been in fine form this season, taking 19 wickets at an average of 21.95. His performances have been crucial for GT, especially in the middle overs. Alongside Jason Holder, Rashid has consistently picked up wickets and remained economical.
For RCB to succeed, they need their Indian batters like Venkatesh Iyer, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Krunal Pandya, and Jitesh Sharma to counter Rashid effectively. Iyer and Padikkal have been instrumental in keeping pressure off other batters, while Krunal Pandya has been a reliable performer in critical situations.
RCB’s Tactics and Strategy
Suyash Sharma has been expensive and ineffective this season, particularly in Dharamshala, where he gave away 50 runs in 4 overs. With dew being a factor in night matches, RCB may look to include Jacob Duffy as an extra pacer, replacing Suyash.
Romario Shephard has improved his bowling in recent matches but has struggled with the bat. His lack of scoring runs is a concern, so replacing him with Phil Salt could be beneficial. Jitesh Sharma and Tim David will need to take on the responsibility of finishing the innings.
Virat Kohli’s Role
Since 2024, Virat Kohli has scored 50 or more in 16 matches, and RCB have won all of them. This season, he has survived the powerplay 7 times, and RCB have won all those matches. However, in the 7 instances where he didn’t survive the powerplay, RCB lost 5 of them.
Kohli needs to ensure he plays a big innings, even if it means a slightly lower strike rate. His presence on the pitch brings a sense of calm and allows his teammates to play freely. It would be unwise for him to take unnecessary risks and perish.
GT’s Bowling Strategy
GT’s best bowling attack consists of Siraj and Rabada, who bowl 3 overs each in the powerplay. This allows them to rotate their bowlers effectively in the middle overs. RCB’s strategy should focus on unsettling the Siraj-Rabada duo and forcing early changes from Gill.
Taking early wickets is crucial for RCB. If they can dismiss the first three batters of GT quickly, they will gain a significant advantage. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood must perform at their best and take responsibility for restricting GT’s batters.
RCB’s Predicted XI
Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (captain), Venkatesh Iyer, Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper), Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rasikh Salam, Josh Hazlewood, Jacob Duffy (impact substitute)
