Kane Cornes Demands Explanation After Twist in Nick Watson Incident

A Controversial Goal and Umpiring Decision

Hawthorn fans and Kane Cornes have been left stunned after a controversial goal by Nick Watson was overruled due to an offside call. The incident has sparked widespread debate among players, fans, and commentators, with many questioning the decision.

The match against St Kilda saw Hawthorn dominate with a 52-point victory, marking a strong performance from the team. Will Day made a notable return from a dislocated shoulder, while Jack Gunston kicked five goals in the 18.11 (119) to 9.13 (67) win. St Kilda struggled significantly, scoring no goals at half-time.

However, the most talked-about moment of the game was Watson’s disallowed goal in the first-half. Watson managed to kick a stunning goal just before the siren, which would have extended Hawthorn’s lead. But the umpire ruled it invalid, claiming Watson had deviated from his line. This decision caused immediate backlash from fans and players alike.

Watson expressed his confusion about the call, telling Kayo Sports, “Don’t get me started… they’re pretty keen to get the whistle out.” He added, “Actually I won’t say anything about the umpires, I might get a fine.”

Coach Mitchell Questions the Decision

Sam Mitchell, the coach of Hawthorn, also voiced his concerns about the ruling. He stated that the team would be seeking clarification from the AFL. “We’ll certainly be going to the AFL to ask about it … there’s no common sense about that,” Mitchell said. He questioned why Watson would run wider to take a harder shot, adding, “When something doesn’t make sense, they fix it pretty quickly.”

Kane Cornes Criticizes the Call

Kane Cornes, a well-known commentator, was particularly vocal about the decision. Speaking on SEN Radio, he described the call as one of the most absurd he has seen. “I’ve seen all the vision that’s available to me. I’ve seen the broadcast vision, I’ve seen it in HD multiple times,” Cornes said. “It’s the dumbest, most ridiculous decision you will see all year. Anyone who wants to argue that I think is ridiculous.”

Cornes also called for an explanation from the AFL, stating, “One of the more bizarre umpiring decisions that I’ve ever seen. Ever.” Despite the criticism, some supporters of the umpire argued that the decision followed the letter of the law.

Teammate Josh Battle Jokes About the Incident

Josh Battle, a teammate of Watson, joked about the situation, suggesting that the players were giving Watson a hard time for moving off his line in a previous incident. “To be fair, the boys were hanging chin on him. I think he has done that a few times now. He has done that in the pre-season game. He is pretty chirpy, he was a bit confused…the boys were into him,” Battle said on 6PR Radio.

Despite the controversy, the Hawks players chose to move on from the incident, focusing on their strong performance in the match. The decision has left the AFL community in shock, with many calling for further clarification from the league.
