Newcastle agree to Barcelona’s £70m offer for Gordon as medical looms

Anthony Gordon Set for Barcelona Medical

Anthony Gordon is set to undergo his Barcelona medical on Thursday, following a £70 million deal between the Spanish champions and Newcastle United. The transfer has seen Barcelona outpace rival clubs such as Bayern Munich and Premier League teams including Liverpool. The move came after sporting director Deco met with Gordon’s representatives on Monday, signaling Barca’s strong interest in securing the 25-year-old winger.

Newcastle have negotiated a package worth more than £70 million, which includes bonuses and a future percentage of any potential sale. Once the deal is finalized, the club will now focus on finding a replacement for Gordon. Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who is 21 years old, is among the shortlisted candidates for the position.

Barcelona took control of the situation when Deco made it clear that he was committed to finalizing the transfer at the start of the week. The talks accelerated on Tuesday after Barca officially contacted Newcastle. Gordon’s representatives had previously engaged with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, with personal terms with the latter already in place for several weeks. However, Bayern were unwilling to exceed their £60 million valuation for the player.

Gordon finished the season as Newcastle’s top scorer with 18 goals but missed the last six games of the campaign amid ongoing speculation about his future. Manager Eddie Howe admitted that this uncertainty was keeping him out of the team.

Everton holds a sell-on clause that will see them receive 15 per cent of the profit from the sale of Gordon, who was bought by Newcastle for £45 million in 2023. Although Liverpool had shown long-term interest in Gordon, they are now focusing on RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, who is valued at £85 million. Paris St Germain’s Bradley Barcola is another potential target.

Gordon nearly joined Liverpool two years ago, with a medical arranged in Germany while he was on international duty at Euro 2024. However, the deal fell through when Newcastle instead sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest to address their financial regulatory shortfall.

Anderson is currently the subject of discussions between Manchester City and Forest, with a potential £100 million plus deal being considered. However, Newcastle do not have a sell-on clause in place for him.

Meanwhile, Barcelona still intend to discuss a deal for Marcus Rashford with Manchester United this week. Their current objective is to secure another loan for the England forward, with a clause allowing them to buy him for £26 million available until June 15.
