The Rise of Curry Barker and the Hollywood Bidding War
Curry Barker, the new favorite in the horror film industry, has become a hot commodity among studio executives. His recent film, Obsession, has not only captivated audiences but also generated significant interest from Hollywood studios. With a modest budget of just $750,000, the film has already earned millions at the box office, making it one of the most successful independent horror films in recent years.
This unexpected success has sparked curiosity across the industry about what Barker could achieve with a larger budget. As a result, studios are now competing fiercely to secure his talents for future projects. The latest development is an eight-figure deal reportedly being considered by one of the major studios.
A Record-Breaking Offer and Studio Competition
According to reports, one studio attempted to offer Curry Barker a $10 million deal for his next original project without even seeing his idea or pitch. However, this offer had to be withdrawn after the studio learned that Barker’s next project is linked to Universal Pictures.
Before Obsession was released by Focus Features, its producers, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, had already secured a deal with Universal Pictures. This agreement gives Universal the first chance to negotiate for Barker’s next original movie.
Another studio is also reportedly interested in working with Barker. If Universal Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster decide to step back, the director could potentially join forces with one of these studios or another willing to make a better offer. Although no official negotiations or confirmed offers have been made yet, The Hollywood Reporter suggests that a bidding war for Barker’s next movie could reach as high as $20 million.
The Success of Obsession
Barker’s Obsession has continued to enjoy immense success. In its second weekend, the film earned $23.9 million, bringing its total domestic gross to $62.3 million. After earning $17.1 million during its opening weekend, the film has proven to be a box office hit.
The movie was acquired by Focus Features for $15 million at the Toronto International Film Festival, further solidifying its value in the industry.
What’s Next for Curry Barker?
While his next original project remains uncertain, Barker’s upcoming film, Anything But Ghosts, is already gaining traction. Co-written by Cooper Tomlinson and Curry Barker, the film is directed by Barker himself. Filming has already wrapped in Vancouver, Canada, and the filmmaker is currently in the editing phase.
The movie features Barker and Tomlinson in leading roles alongside three-time Primetime Emmy winner Aaron Paul. It follows two fake paranormal investigators who are forced to confront real ghosts while running their fraudulent business.
Before Obsession became a box office success, Focus Features had already backed Anything But Ghosts. The film is being produced by Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, Spooky Pictures, and Divide/Conquer. It is expected to receive a theatrical release, although the exact date has not been confirmed yet.
Industry Reactions and Future Prospects
With his growing reputation and the potential for a multi-million-dollar deal, Curry Barker is poised to become a major force in the horror genre. Studios are eager to secure his talents, and the competition for his next project is heating up.
As the industry watches closely, fans and critics alike are eager to see what Barker will bring next. Whether he chooses to work with Universal Pictures, another studio, or even pursue an independent route, one thing is clear: Curry Barker is a rising star in Hollywood.
