Rishabh Pant Steps Down as Captain of Lucknow Super Giants
Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following a challenging IPL 2026 season. The wicketkeeper-batter made the decision after LSG finished at the bottom of the points table, securing only four wins from 14 matches. This result was far from ideal and marked a difficult chapter for the franchise.
The franchise officially confirmed that Pant requested to step away from the captaincy, and the management accepted his request. This move comes just two seasons after Pant joined the team for a record-breaking INR 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025. The timing of this decision adds weight to the situation, highlighting the pressure and expectations placed on him.
Sunil Gavaskar Weighs In on Pant’s Decision
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has commented on Pant’s choice and the potential internal issues that may have affected the team during the campaign. Gavaskar pointed out that Pant’s tenure as captain was not smooth, with the team struggling in terms of performance and his own batting not meeting expectations.
There were also signs of frustration within the LSG setup during the tournament. After one defeat, Pant reportedly mentioned that there were too many opinions around him, which complicated decision-making rather than simplifying it. The team had a large support staff, including Justin Langer, Tom Moody, Bharat Arun, Lance Klusener, and Kane Williamson.
In a column for Sportstar, Gavaskar discussed Pant’s remarks and their implications. He wrote:
“Rishabh Pant stepping down as the captain of his team, which finished bottom of the table, is the first change in captaincy for the next season, as there could well be many more before the new season starts next year. He did say on more than one occasion that there were too many voices in his ear and too many thought processes, which is definitely not a compliment to the support staff. Whether that leads to a wholesale change at the franchise will be interesting to see.”
He added:
“Talk is easy, and it is cheap too, and making big claims like some coaches have, may make good headlines, but cricket has a funny way of biting on the backside.”
A Contrast with Andy Flower
Gavaskar also highlighted the coaching style of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower. RCB managed to defend their IPL title in 2026 by defeating Gujarat Titans in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This victory marked their second consecutive IPL trophy, a significant achievement.
Gavaskar praised Flower’s calm and straightforward approach, suggesting it could serve as a model for other teams. He noted:
“Andy Flower, the coach of RCB, which has now won two back-to-back titles, is a fine example of someone who works quietly, with no big statements that make headlines. And no golfing and beer-drinking buddies as members of his support staff either.”
“Maybe there’s a lesson there. If only those who appoint them could see that, then their teams would not be out of contention even before the first month of the tournament is over.”
Big Calls Ahead for LSG
Pant’s decision to step down sets the stage for a potential rebuild for Lucknow Super Giants. As they prepare for IPL 2027, the franchise must address several key questions. They need to decide who will take over the leadership role and whether changes are necessary within the coaching setup.
For Pant, this change could allow him to focus more on his batting and regain his best form. For LSG, the coming months will be crucial as they aim to recover from one of the most disappointing periods in the franchise’s history. The path forward remains uncertain, but the opportunity for renewal is clear.
