A Controversial Coaching Appointment at Essendon
The recent developments surrounding the Essendon coaching position have sparked a heated debate among football legends and current coaches. Tony Shaw, a Collingwood great, has called it a “deadset joke” if prospective coaches are hesitant to apply for the role because of James Hird’s strong position. This sentiment is echoed by Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel, who believes that other coaches should have the confidence to challenge Hird for the job.
Coaches’ Reactions
Ken Hinkley and Adam Simpson have both stated they are not interested in the Essendon coaching job and believe that no other coaches would apply if it seems like Hird is already set for the role. However, former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has a different perspective, expressing that he does not share the same concerns.
Mick Malthouse, a legendary coach, has claimed that Essendon has “already decided” they want Hird for the position. He criticized the idea of holding a proper interview process if this is the case, calling it a “sham.” Speaking on 3AW radio, Shaw expressed his frustration with the situation, stating, “What a deadset joke” if other coaches didn’t want to apply because of Hird.
Shaw emphasized that any coach who wants the job should be willing to put their best foot forward and argue their case to the board. “You don’t get caught up in the ‘favourite son’ stuff. You make him look embarrassed by the way that you present to the board. Man up you other blokes, get your presentation ready, go in there and sell yourself,” he said.
Challenges for Other Coaches
On Channel 9’s Footy Classified, Bartel questioned why other coaches would fear Hird, given that he hasn’t been a coach at AFL level in 10 years. “Shouldn’t you have the confidence to be able to beat someone out?” he asked. His comments highlight the pressure on other candidates to step up and prove themselves against Hird’s strong position.
Malthouse further fueled the controversy by claiming that those involved in Essendon’s decision-making process have already pushed the button on Hird. He suggested that the only reason anyone would apply is to gain experience. “It’s already been decided. And any young bloke will go through it just for the process of understanding what it’s like to be interviewed,” he said.

Hinkley’s Perspective
Hinkley, who has previously spoken about the need for Essendon to decide whether they want Hird, stated that if they do, they should commit to the decision. “If they decide that, that’s what they should go with and they should do that,” he said on SEN. However, he added that he can’t imagine anyone entering the race for the Essendon coaching job, given Hird’s strong position.
Hinkley’s comments reflect the perception that Hird is already in a strong position, with many believing that the job is effectively his. “It looks like this is somewhat James Hird’s job,” he concluded.
The Broader Implications
The debate around the Essendon coaching appointment highlights the challenges faced by coaches who are not in the spotlight. It raises questions about the fairness of the process and whether the best candidate is truly being considered. With Hird’s name dominating the conversation, it remains to be seen whether other candidates will step forward and challenge his position. For now, the focus is on whether the process will be transparent and whether all potential candidates will be given a fair chance to compete.
