Saliba injury concerns eased by Deschamps’ reassurance

Didier Deschamps has reassured fans and supporters that William Saliba is in good health ahead of France’s World Cup campaign. The 25-year-old centre-back played the full 120 minutes during Arsenal’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest, where they lost on penalties. Following the match, Saliba was present with his teammates for the Premier League trophy parade in London, celebrating with a massive crowd of Arsenal fans estimated to be around one million.

Despite this, there were reports on Monday suggesting that Saliba had been dealing with a back injury, which reportedly worsened after the Champions League final. A French publication, Foot Mercato, indicated that the defender could be out for several weeks, raising concerns about his availability for the World Cup.

However, Deschamps addressed these concerns directly at the national team base in Clairefontaine. As reported by La Depeche, the French manager stated that he had “read nothing” about an injury, adding, “He’s here, everything is fine.” Although Saliba underwent fitness tests on Monday, the medical staff are still awaiting the results to determine if he is fully fit.

RMC Sport noted that it remains uncertain whether Saliba will be ready to start against Senegal on June 16, when France begins their World Cup campaign. The outcome of the tests will play a crucial role in deciding his participation.

Saliba will need to prove his fitness and secure his place in the starting XI as competition for central defensive spots is intense. Players such as Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate, and Maxence Lacroix are also part of the squad, with Jules Kounde being another option at centre-back. If Saliba is fit, it is likely that he will form a partnership with Upamecano. France will face Iraq and Norway in Group I of the tournament.
