A Unique Culinary Journey
In the world of culinary arts, certain ingredient pairings are considered iconic. Salt and pepper, knife and fork, orange and fennel, maple and bacon — these combinations have stood the test of time. This week on MasterChef Australia, contestants were challenged to explore such perfect pairings, showcasing their creativity and skill in the kitchen.
Unfortunately for Olaolu, one of his chosen pairings — pineapple and coconut — did not work out as expected. During an elimination cook, he created a tropical trifle featuring whipped yoghurt, coconut crumb, and macerated pineapple in Malibu. However, the judges felt the dish was too safe and lacked the depth required for this stage of the competition. Olaolu admits that the issue wasn’t with the ingredients themselves, but rather with the influence of a previous dish.
“My downfall wasn’t the flavour pair, but the memory of my melty ice cream sandwich from the previous day,” Olaolu explains. “It made me pick something that felt safer but ultimately missed the brief. It’s a delicious flavour combo and I will definitely be cooking with it again.”
Despite the setback, Olaolu had mixed feelings about leaving the competition. He expressed gratitude for the experience and was proud of the Nigerian dishes he showcased. However, he also felt a sense of loss, as there was much more he wanted to share. He missed his fellow contestants and felt a strong sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) for the rest of the competition.
Support from Family and Friends
The transition back to regular life was made easier by the unwavering support and pride from Olaolu’s family. Throughout the competition, he had achieved several milestones, including winning challenges, meeting renowned chefs, and even earning a cash prize of $10,000. Despite the exciting moments in the kitchen, Olaolu believes the highlight of the experience was the friendships he formed.
“Meeting a bunch of other food nerds who also happened to be legends,” he says with a chuckle. “And because we’re constantly practicing, we’re always eating tasty food. Eating multiple MasterChef-worthy dishes a week is a pretty good life.”

A New Direction
Olaolu feels that the experience has inspired him to follow his heart and palette, using food as a way to share his Nigerian culture. He emphasizes how food can connect people in various ways, whether through cooking together, sharing meals, or exchanging stories around the table.
“Through this competition, I’ve seen first-hand how much you can connect with people through food,” he explains. “Whether it’s through cooking together, sharing the food itself, or sharing stories around the food, there’s so many ways food can help people understand each other. I’ll be trying to do that however and wherever I can.”
