Industry leaders urge ITV to ban Nadia Sawalha over antisemitic posts

Rising Concerns Over Nadia Sawalha’s Potential Return to ITV

A growing number of Jewish figures in the entertainment industry have raised serious concerns about the potential return of Nadia Sawalha to ITV, following accusations that she has promoted antisemitic content on social media. The actress and presenter, who previously appeared on the daytime show Loose Women, was removed from the panel last month after defending her husband Mark Adderley’s controversial comments and sharing a series of videos that were described as “unhinged.”

The controversy has led to a 15-page letter being sent to ITV executives, outlining the concerns of several high-profile individuals. Among the signatories are former ITV executive Claudia Rosencrantz, former BBC Television Director Danny Cohen, and Fulwell Entertainment co-CEO Leo Pearlman. These figures argue that Ms. Sawalha has not been engaging in legitimate political debate but rather promoting conspiracy theories and disinformation.

The letter highlights several instances where Ms. Sawalha has allegedly endorsed antisemitic narratives and amplified inflammatory content related to Israel and Jewish people. It also criticizes her for what is described as a dismissive attitude toward allegations of antisemitism, suggesting that her behavior could be perceived as threatening or hostile by viewers.

The group argues that ITV should take responsibility for holding Ms. Sawalha accountable, given the current climate where British Jews face more hate crimes per capita than any other minority group. They question whether it is appropriate for her to return to the channel, especially considering the standards expected of a mainstream television presenter.

Key points raised in the letter include:

  • The repeated promotion of antisemitic conspiracy narratives
  • The amplification of false claims about Israel and Jewish people
  • A lack of sensitivity and responsibility in addressing antisemitism
  • The potential reputational damage to ITV if Ms. Sawalha returns to the show

The letter also references specific videos shared by Ms. Sawalha and her husband, Mark Adderley, which have been linked to extremist views. Mr. Adderley, who was recently suspended from the Green Party for comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, has been defended by Ms. Sawalha as “the most decent kind, super smart man with the hugest of hearts.”

These videos, which include claims about “Israeli false flag” operations, have been cited as evidence of the couple’s extremist sympathies. The signatories of the letter argue that their public appearances together further reinforce these concerns.

The group also warns that allowing Ms. Sawalha to return to Loose Women would be incompatible with the expectations of judgment, responsibility, and public trust associated with a major national broadcaster.

In response to the growing pressure, some advocacy groups have called for ITV to take action against Ms. Sawalha. Alex Hearn from Labour Against Antisemitism stated, “Nadia Sawalha has been posting vile, unhinged rants online for some time now. It is time ITV took action against her.”

Ms. Sawalha has not yet responded to requests for comment. As the debate continues, the situation remains a focal point for discussions around media responsibility, freedom of speech, and the impact of online content on public discourse.
