Manchester United’s Summer Transfer Strategy
Manchester United have made their first significant move in the summer transfer window, securing the services of Ederson from Atalanta. The Brazilian goalkeeper is set to join the club for a fee of £38 million, with the official announcement expected in July. Upon his arrival, Ederson will sign a four-year contract with the Red Devils, marking a key step in head coach Michael Carrick’s plan to rebuild the team’s midfield.
The deal was finalized on Tuesday afternoon, with United paying an initial £34 million to Atalanta, and the remaining amount to be paid through add-ons. This move comes as part of the club’s broader strategy to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
Targeting Midfield Reinforcements
United have been actively seeking to bolster their midfield, with a focus on bringing in at least two central midfielders. In addition, they are looking for a forward and competition in the full-back and goalkeeper positions. The departure of Casemiro and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte have prompted the club to explore new options.
West Ham’s relegation has reduced their leverage in negotiations for Mateus Fernandes, as they need to generate over £100 million in player sales. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s asking price for Sandro Tonali remains high, and while Carlos Baleba would welcome the opportunity to join, Brighton are reluctant to sell their players cheaply.
Potential Targets and Challenges
United’s ideal targets have included Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid or Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. However, Tchouameni is still expected to move to rivals Manchester City if a suitable fee can be reached. Nottingham Forest have reportedly valued Anderson at £125 million, but Manchester City see a deal closer to £90 million.
As reported by Daily Mail Sport last month, Ederson’s future at Atalanta appeared uncertain after he was left out of the starting line-up against Fiorentina. Then-Atalanta coach Raffaele Palladino confirmed that not fielding Ederson was a mutual decision, adding that there were ongoing developments related to the transfer market.
“The fact that he is being tracked by such an important club should be a source of pride,” Palladino said.
In Ederson’s absence, Atalanta drew the game 1-1, marking their final match of the season.

Looking Ahead
With these developments, Manchester United are positioning themselves to make a strong statement in the transfer market. The acquisition of Ederson is a significant step in their plans to revitalize the squad and compete at the highest level. As the summer progresses, fans will be watching closely to see how the club continues to build its roster for the upcoming season.
