Tom Holland Reflects on His Dance Career and Future in Hollywood
Tom Holland, best known for his role as Spider-Man, has shared his thoughts on leaving behind his early career in dance. Before becoming a major Hollywood actor, Holland was deeply involved in the performing arts, particularly in London’s West End. At just 12 years old, he was part of the cast of Billy Elliot: The Musical, where he played the role of Michael Caffrey, Billy’s best friend. He later took over the title role, showcasing his talent at a young age.
Despite his current focus on acting, Holland has expressed a sense of regret about stepping away from dancing. In an interview on the Good Hang podcast, he mentioned that after finishing Billy Elliot: The Musical, he stopped taking formal dance classes. “I think my biggest regret in my career so far is that when I finished [Billy Elliot: The Musical], I quit dancing,” he said. “I just, you know, would dance at a club or something, but wouldn’t go and take class.”
However, Holland recently returned to his roots for the first rehearsal of an untitled Fred Astaire biopic, in which he will portray the legendary dancer. This project has reignited his passion for dance. “And the thing I love most about my job is that you can book a film and learn all of these amazing skills from the best people in the business,” he added. “And to be able to do that again and pick up dancing from square one and try to get back into it, I think it’s going to be so fulfilling.”
Holland also spoke about his nerves regarding the film, calling it a “huge undertaking” from a preparation standpoint. “It’s a big risk. It’s a big movie,” he said. “But after that rehearsal, any fears I had or questions of ‘Should I be making this movie?’ completely left the room.”
Looking Ahead: Passing the Torch
In addition to his upcoming projects, Holland has shared his thoughts on the future of the Spider-Man franchise. During an interview with Empire, he mentioned that he plans to eventually pass the superhero role to a worthy successor. “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” he said. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what [Robert Downey Jr.] did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introduced Holland’s Spider-Man to the universe in Captain America: Civil War. Since then, Holland has starred in three Spider-Man films and appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
