Should you upgrade your vacuum at EOFY or wait? We find out

Why EOFY is the Best Time to Buy a Vacuum Cleaner

EOFY is one of the best times to buy a vacuum cleaner, as the category moves fast and last year’s flagship models suddenly become very good value. We asked the people who live and breathe floor care what they’d actually buy right now, and why June is the best time to buy.

Is Now a Good Time to Buy a Vacuum Cleaner on Sale?

EOFY is typically when people buy electronics, office equipment, furniture, and appliances. It’s also a time where retailers run big clearance sales to shift inventory, so it’s actually a great time to buy a vacuum cleaner as you can grab a quality model at a solid price. “EOFY helps close the gap by making higher-spec models more accessible,” adds Danni Li, Australian Marketing Manager at Roborock. However, make sure you’re considering your needs first before purchasing, rather than just the price point. “The best value is usually not the cheapest option — it is the product that solves the right cleaning problem with the right level of automation,” says Danni.

  • The EOFY sales I’m really excited about this year (and the ones I’d skip)
  • When to replace your old vacuum cleaner

“A vacuum is worth reconsidering when it no longer cleans efficiently, requires repeated passes, needs frequent part replacements, or no longer suits your current home environment,” says Danni. “The hidden cost is often not just electricity or repairs, but time and cleaning effectiveness. If an older vacuum struggles with pet hair, carpets, edges, wet messes or fine dust, users may spend more time cleaning and still get poorer results. For many households, upgrading is less about replacing an old machine for the sake of it, and more about solving a new cleaning pain point — such as pets.”

Where to Buy a Vacuum Cleaner on Sale

If you’ve been waiting for a price drop, now’s a reasonable time to pull the trigger. Dyson is offering up to $651 off select vacuums direct, while dedicated appliance retailers The Good Guys, Bing Lee, and JB Hi-Fi all have EOFY sales running until June 30 — worth checking across all three, as stock and discounts vary by brand. Amazon Australia and Kogan are also worth a look if you’re flexible on model, with broader appliance discounts across both. For department store options, Myer and David Jones have sales running across appliances and homewares, and BISSELL is running its own mid-season sale with up to $149 off carpet and upholstery cleaners specifically.

What Experts Say to Skip This EOFY

“Black Friday is usually a major promotional period, but EOFY often brings strong offers because it aligns with retailer sales cycles,” says Danni Li, Australian Marketing Manager at Roborock, referring to the mid-season sale period. “The advice would be: don’t just buy the biggest discount — buy the right cleaning solution for your home. Before hitting ‘add to cart’, ask: what cleaning problem am I actually trying to solve? If the issue is daily dust, pet hair, and not having enough time, a robot vacuum may be the right upgrade. If the issue is sticky spills, grease, or wet messes on hard floors, a wet/dry vacuum may be more suitable. If the need is quick spot cleaning, a cordless vacuum may be enough. EOFY is a great time to upgrade, but the best purchase is the one that saves time, reduces effort and genuinely fits the way you live.”

What the Experts Say to Look for Before Purchasing a Vacuum Cleaner

Style

Each style of vacuum cleaner has its pros and cons, so it’s important to consider which factors you’d like to prioritise. For example, is convenience or battery power the most important factor for you?

Floor type

While many vacuums come with an array of additional attachments to allow you to vacuum efficiently on all surfaces and even help reach into the farthest nooks and crannies, some models do not. A vacuum designed for carpet is very different from one that’s optimised for floorboards.

Battery power

Mainly a problem for cordless and robot vacuums — consider the size of your home and how much runtime you will need. Many stick vacuums allow you to purchase an additional battery to help extend your runtime as needed.

Suction power

Not all vacuums suck equally. In addition to looking at the suction force (check the air wattage — 100AW is a good place to start!), you’ll want to examine the filtration system in your vacuum. An easily clogged filter will have a dramatic impact on your vacuum’s suction power throughout its runtime. “For pet owners, anti-tangle design, hair pickup, suction power and filtration should be high priorities,” notes Danni.

Cleaning factor

How easy is your vacuum to empty and clean? Many robot vacuums can self-empty and clean, while corded vacuums with bags ensure all of your dirt and dust stays confined during the disposal process.

Different Types of Vacuum Cleaners and the Benefits and Downsides of Each

Stick and handheld vacuums

The biggest trend in floor care is undoubtedly the newer lightweight stick/handheld cleaners. Stick vacuum cleaners have rapidly improved in both suction and battery life, and usually come with an assortment of attachments that make them a truly viable option for all homes and their surfaces.

In the past, one of the major downsides of cordless vacuums has been their smaller battery and need for regular recharging. Newer models allow for quick-swapping with additional batteries, allowing you to instantly extend your runtime. Some models, like the Dyson Outsize, also come with significantly larger cleaner heads to help make cleaning bigger spaces more efficient.

Suction strength and hardy filters have also become a mainstay in the category. Heavy-duty filtration systems are designed to ensure your vacuum can clean the most minuscule particles without affecting the suction quality of your device. Samsung’s JetStick vacuum, for example, offers an advanced 5-layer dust filtration system, which is ideal for minimising allergens in the home.

But, it’s worth noting that sticks are not always great for carpeted areas, especially those with a shag finish. And, depending on the size of your home, they still might not be ideal if you like to do all the vacuuming at once.

However, they are a fantastic option for people who tend to clean in short, sharp bursts or do quick touch-ups every day or so. Their compact nature also makes them easy to store — especially in smaller homes and apartments.

When you only want or need to do a bit here and there, you can’t beat a hands-on option.

Canister vacuums

It may come as a surprise, but people are still comfortable with using canister vacuums, says Colin. “Their compartments are typically larger and the perception is that, as they are powered directly from an outlet, they are more powerful than the cordless options. With a canister, you also don’t have to worry about running out of charge,” he explains.

A leader in this category is Miele, and Robin Werth, head of category management and marketing, of Miele Australia and New Zealand, believes canister vacuum cleaners offer the ideal solution for a more powerful, deep clean.

Robin is an advocate for bagged vacuum cleaners, and Miele has no intention of phasing them out. “Bagged vacuum cleaners remain Miele’s best sellers and the category continues to grow due to popularity,” he says. “Key reasons include hygienic dust disposal and cleanliness, along with convenience and no need for maintenance.”

It’s worth noting that allergy sufferers usually prefer bagged cleaners because they contain indoor allergens and dust better.

Packed with power, the classic style is still your go-to for getting the job done on all floor types.

Robot vacuums

Ideal for homes with hard surfaces such as timber or tiles, robot vacuum cleaners take most of the work out of keeping your floor clean. Not only will they work while you’re out of the house, but they’re also smart enough to return to their hubs whenever they need recharging.

“Not long ago, robotic vacuums were synonymous with being more of a nuisance than they were helpful as they lacked intelligence and adequate navigation abilities,” says Karen Powell, Head of Ecovacs Robotics for Australia and New Zealand. “New technology coupled with the ability for them to compete with more traditional vacuums in terms of suction power, proves that robotic vacuums are now no longer a gimmick but genuinely helpful home essentials adding a plethora of functional benefits in our homes.”

“Robot vacuums are proving a popular solution for the time-poor people, removing the grunt work associated with vacuuming,” says Colin. “Some models will manoeuvre around your furniture and will know to put the brakes on at the top of your stairs. If this convenience isn’t enough, you can even control some of these vacuums using an app on your smartphone or tablet.”

The navigational technology of robot vacuums continues to improve in leaps and bounds, and some models like the Ecovacs’ OZMO range are hybrid models – meaning that they can mop, sweep and vacuum your floor, which can be extra handy for those with timber or tiled floors.

Why apply all that elbow grease when a new machine can do it for you – and never complain!

Should I Purchase a Corded or Cordless Vacuum Cleaner?

Cordless vacuums were once seen mainly as a convenience upgrade, but the category has improved significantly. The question is not simply corded vs cordless, but “what cleaning job do I need this product to solve?”

“Today, many cordless models offer strong suction, better battery performance, and more flexible manoeuvrability for everyday cleaning,” says Danni. “That said, the bigger shift is not only from corded to cordless, but from manual cleaning to more task-specific cleaning solutions. Cordless vacuums are great for quick, flexible clean-ups. Wet/dry vacuums are better for hard-floor messes, spills, and sticky stains. Robot vacuums are best for automated daily maintenance.”
