Son of James Handy’s Partner Spotted Walking Near Scene of Tragedy

Tragic Death of Veteran Actor James Handy

A chilling sequence of events led to the death of veteran actor James Handy, who was found stabbed to death on his front lawn in Tarzana, California. Surveillance footage from a neighboring property captured the moment his girlfriend’s son, Michael Gledhill, walked away from the scene just before police arrived.

Handy, 81, had nearly 150 film and television credits to his name, including notable roles in Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick. He was discovered by police after a 911 call triggered an urgent response. Officers rushed to his home on Erwin Street, where they found him unconscious in the front yard with a severe chest wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“Unfortunately, I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” said Pam Ellis-Evenas, Handy’s talent agent, in a statement.

Michael Gledhill, 44, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently held on a $2 million bond. Authorities claim that Gledhill called 911 around 9:30 am, delivering a disturbing message to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” he allegedly told the police, according to reports.

However, when officers arrived at the scene, Gledhill was seen walking away from the house. Security footage from a nearby residence showed him strolling down the sidewalk, with bloody clothes nearby. Later, he returned to the house and flagged down the responding officers, admitting that he was the one they were looking for.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but neighbors reported that Gledhill and Handy had been arguing overnight. One resident claimed that Gledhill had been experiencing delusions prior to the incident.

This tragic event echoes the brutal stabbing of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, by their disturbed son, Nick, just miles away in Hollywood. The similarities between the two cases have raised concerns about mental health and domestic violence.

Career Highlights

James Handy was born in New York City and made his on-screen debut in ABC’s Ryan’s Hope in 1977, the same year he appeared in the film Taps. His career spanned decades, with notable appearances in Logan, where he played the doctor treating Hugh Jackman’s character, and in the 1995 hit Jumanji, where he portrayed the exterminator.

Handy also had recurring roles on popular TV shows such as NYPD Blue, Alias, and Profile. He appeared in other series like The West Wing, Castle, and The X-Files, showcasing his versatility as a character actor.

His most recent role was in Top Gun: Maverick, where he played the bartender, Jimmy. Fans and colleagues alike remember him as a kind and generous individual who brought warmth and depth to every performance.

Tributes from Colleagues and Fans

Following the news of his passing, many in the entertainment industry shared their memories of Handy. Scott Alan Smith, professor of Performing Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design, recalled directing him at the Road Theater Company in 2018.

“Jim was not only a truly great actor, he was also a prince of a man—kind and generous and giving to his cast and audience,” Smith wrote on Facebook.

Another fan, Nancy Lipner, shared how Handy had played her father in a play when they were both non-union actors in New York City. “He was only two or three years older than I, but somehow he brought it off, in large part because he was a terrific character actor,” she noted.

Fans took to social media to express their grief and admiration for Handy. Many highlighted his consistent performances in supporting roles, calling him a “fine character actor” and “the ultimate ‘that guy’ actor.”

One user wrote, “James Handy was a great ’90s character actor—always delivered solid, memorable supporting work.” Another added, “Rest in peace, James Handy—you were in everything.”

A Tragic Parallel

The death of James Handy has drawn comparisons to another tragic case involving Rob Reiner and his wife. The Reiners were found dead with their throats slit in their Brentwood home in December. Their youngest son, Nick, was arrested in connection with their deaths.

Nick, who has a history of mental health issues, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder. He remains in custody ahead of his next court appearance in September.
