“I’d Better Not”: Paul Elliott Shuns ChuckleVision Slogan with King

A Legacy of Laughter and Philanthropy

Comedian Paul Elliott recently shared a lighthearted moment while accepting a medal from the King, joking about referencing the Chuckle Brothers’ iconic “To me, to you” catchphrase. However, he decided against it, saying, “I was at one point, and thought, ‘I’d better not.’ He’s a year younger than me, not a ChuckleVision fan… I don’t think he watches ChuckleVision.” This humorous reflection highlights the enduring impact of the comedy duo, which has left a lasting mark on British television.

Elliott, who is best known for his work alongside his late brother Barry in the long-running comedy sketch show, was among 68 individuals honored by the King on Tuesday. Other recipients included Luther star Sir Idris Elba and comedian and actress Dame Meera Syal. The 78-year-old was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his charitable service, and he described his conversation with the King as “really good.” During the exchange, the King asked Elliott about Marie Curie and his role as an ambassador, showing a genuine interest in his work.

The Enduring Impact of the Chuckle Brothers

The Chuckle Brothers, known for their slapstick humor and chaotic antics, became a staple in many British homes. Their show, which ran for nearly 300 episodes during the 1990s and 2000s, featured the hapless, accident-prone brothers causing chaos wherever they went. Elliott reflected on the show’s success, saying it was “amazing” that the show and its catchphrase have had such an enduring impact.

He recalled the initial uncertainty surrounding the show, stating, “The first series, back in ’97, we thought, ‘Let’s hope we get two or three series out of it.’ Twenty-three series later, they take it off (air).” The show’s longevity was due in part to the creative vision of Martin Hughes, the director and producer, who initially doubted whether the duo could come up with 30 different storylines. However, the team managed to create 292 episodes without repeating any content, a testament to their talent and dedication.

A Commitment to Charity

In addition to his comedic legacy, Elliott has been deeply involved in philanthropy. He became an ambassador for end-of-life charity Marie Curie alongside Barry in October 2016. The charity’s nurses played a vital role in caring for Barry during his final hours. Elliott passed away of bone cancer in August 2018 at the age of 73.

“We love the things they do,” Elliott said. “They’re just wonderful people, not just looking after the person who was dying, but the family around them. That’s the main thing. They might give you a big hug around you, because everybody needs a hug when they’re losing somebody.”

The Support of Marie Curie Nurses

Elliott emphasized the incredible support provided by Marie Curie nurses, highlighting their compassion and dedication. He shared a touching story about how the nurses stayed with the wife of a patient all night after her father passed away, ensuring she wasn’t alone. “Just absolutely amazing the things that they do,” he said. “And they’re there for you, two, three, four months, however long you need them for after somebody’s passed. You can just get on to ring them, and they’ll talk to you and comfort you again.”

A Royal Recognition

When asked what Barry would make of seeing his brother collect his award, Elliott said, “He’d love it. We used to think for years we’d never get any sort of recognition, at any time in our lives, so he would have loved to be here. Very much a royalist, like me. It’s just a wonderful day.” This heartfelt reflection underscores the deep bond between the brothers and their shared passion for both comedy and philanthropy.

Elliott’s journey from the stage to the royal court is a testament to his resilience, humor, and commitment to making a difference. His legacy continues through the work of Marie Curie and the enduring influence of the Chuckle Brothers on British entertainment.
