The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson has found himself at the center of a controversy after he challenged a crowd that was chanting “U-S-A.” The incident occurred during a concert in Tampa, Florida, where Robinson, 59, faced backlash from fans for his response to the pro-American cheer.
The situation began when an image of the band’s black crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam was displayed on a screen behind the stage. As the crowd started chanting, Robinson responded with sarcasm, saying, “Thanks for the geography lesson.” His remarks were met with boos, and as the chant continued, he added, “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.”
The tension escalated further as the crowd thinned out, with Robinson continuing to speak from the stage. He said, “Some of us have real faith. For those of you fing booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fing ignorant.”
This exchange took place during the band’s performance of their hit song “She Talks to Angels.” A video of the incident quickly spread online, leading to increased criticism on the band’s official social media accounts. One person wrote on X, “I had no clue who you guys were; but I do now. But I won’t listen to your music.” Another comment stated, “You’ve lost a lifelong fan with your disgusting anti-American garbage. There is nothing ‘Southern’ about you or your music. What a disappointing farce. Get out of this country commie filth!”
Despite the backlash, The Black Crowes have not publicly addressed the controversy. They also did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, the band shared on X that they attended a Tampa Bay Rays baseball game the night after the show.
Chris Robinson and his guitarist brother, Rich, founded The Black Crowes in 1984. The rock band became a staple in the 1990s, known for their early albums such as Shake Your Money Maker (1990) and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992). The group disbanded in 2015 but reunited in 2019. Earlier this year, they released their new album A Pound of Feathers, marking their first project since their 2024 album Happiness Bastards was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
The band recently kicked off the North American leg of their tour in May, continuing their legacy in the rock music scene.
