A New Approach to Lunar Travel
Offering space travel services to the Moon is still a dream for many companies. Major technology firms are showing interest in acquiring land on the Moon and taking people on space voyages. A Different Way To Study Space Travel
This breakthrough comes from a study published in April 2026 in the journal Astrodynamics. Experts from the University of São Paulo and the University of Coimbra examined millions of possible Earth-to-Moon paths using advanced computer simulations. The research aimed to find alternative routes that could reduce fuel consumption and lower mission costs.
To conduct this research, the team used a method known as the ‘theory of functional connections,’ which helps reduce the computing power required for complex orbital calculations. They studied around 30 million possible trajectories and analyzed nearly 280,000 of them for their final paper.
Rather than focusing on the shortest route between the Moon and Earth, the experts searched for less obvious paths that might save fuel. According to the study, this approach could help space agencies design their missions more efficiently.
Exploring Gravitational Pathways
The study explored an overlooked system of gravitational pathways in space called the Interplanetary Transportation Network. These natural corridors are created by the combined gravitational pull of planets and the Moon. They can guide spacecraft using less energy, making space travel more efficient.
One of the key findings of the research is that the newly identified path can save about 58.8 metres per second of fuel compared to the best route previously known. While this number may seem small, even minor fuel savings can significantly reduce mission costs in space travel.

The results of this study could have a major impact on future space exploration. By understanding and using these hidden gravitational pathways more effectively, scientists could create cheaper and more sustainable routes across the solar system.
