James Handy, a well-known character actor with a career spanning nearly 50 years, was tragically killed in a stabbing that has shocked the entertainment industry. The incident occurred at a home in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, where the 81-year-old actor was found unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest on Wednesday morning. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has arrested 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, on suspicion of murder. According to officials, Gledhill lived at the residence with his mother, Wendy Gledhill, who has been identified by media reports.
Wendy Gledhill shared her emotional response with TMZ, revealing that her son suffers from mental health issues, including schizophrenia, and had stopped taking his medication just days before the incident. “They know I loved him so much,” she said. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry this happened. I’m still in shock. I still can’t comprehend it.”
Handy was a beloved figure in Hollywood, appearing in over 100 movies and TV shows. Among his most recent roles was in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise. He played a bartender named Jimmy in the film, which marked one of his final performances.
The LAPD reported that officers responded to the home after a 911 call in which the caller claimed, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” At the scene, Gledhill approached the officers and told them, “He was the one they were looking for,” according to police. Security footage also appears to show him walking around the area shortly after the stabbing.
Gledhill’s bail was set at $2 million, though it remains unclear if he has hired an attorney. As of Friday afternoon, the LAPD has not released any updates on the case, and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has yet to provide further information.
Wendy Gledhill expressed her devastation to The California Post, stating she is “still in shock” and “trying to make it through one day at a time.” She added, “I loved James and my son. I still can’t believe it… I can’t believe my son did it.”
Authorities have described the incident as an “isolated event” with no danger to the public. However, the motive behind the stabbing has not been disclosed.
Handy’s agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, confirmed his death to The Independent, expressing deep sadness. “With great sadness I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” she said.
Ellis-Evenas praised Handy’s character, adding, “I could not have asked for a more talented, humble or gracious client and friend than James Handy.”
Colleagues and fans are mourning the loss of a versatile actor who left a lasting impact on the entertainment world. Scott Alan Smith, a professor of Performing Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design, paid tribute to Handy on Facebook, calling him “a prince of a man – kind and generous and giving to his cast and audience.”
Actress Nancy Lipner, who worked with Handy in a New York City play, recalled his talent and warmth. “He was only two or three years older than I, but somehow he brought it off, in large part because he was a terrific character actor,” she said.
Born in New York City, Handy made his screen debut in 1977 in the ABC daytime drama Ryan’s Hope. Over the years, he appeared in numerous TV series, including NYPD Blue, Alias, Law & Order, Criminal Minds, ER, The X-Files, Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, and 9-1-1.
His film credits include The Verdict, Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer, Point of No Return, Unbreakable, and Logan. In the 1995 film Jumanji, he played an exterminator, and in Top Gun: Maverick, he portrayed a bartender.
Handy’s passing comes amid a wave of tragic events in the entertainment industry, including the double murder of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in late 2022. Their son, Nick, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
