Urgent Bali Travel Alert for Aussies After Tourist Dragged by Suspect

Australians in Bali Warned to Stay Vigilant After Jewelry Theft Incidents

Australians traveling to Bali have been urged to remain alert following a series of suspected ‘snatch and grab’ jewelry thefts. These incidents have raised concerns among tourists and local authorities alike, especially in popular tourist areas like Seminyak.

One such incident occurred on May 12 when Diego Palhano, a Brisbane resident, was leaving a nightclub in the Seminyak district. A thief on a motorbike managed to rip a necklace from him, causing him to be dragged along the ground. The footage, shared by The Daily Telegraph, shows Mr. Palhano being pulled by the thief who held onto his necklace, which was a family heirloom.

Mr. Palhano reported that he did not suffer any injuries to his legs. However, the clasp of the necklace broke, allowing the suspect to ride away. He tried to chase the thief but admitted it was impossible given the motorbike’s speed.

The necklace, valued at $30,000, belonged to Mr. Palhano’s great-grandfather. In response to the theft, he is offering a reward of 70 million Indonesian rupiah, approximately $5,591, for its return.

Mr. Palhano, who considers Bali a second home, said the incident has left him shaken. “All the violence in this… It’s a little bit more than just upsetting,” he said. He is one of 10 Australians who have been robbed in similar circumstances along beachfront areas in Indonesia.

In May, police arrested a local man who used a motorbike to snatch a gold necklace from a 67-year-old Australian woman in Legian, a five-minute drive south of Seminyak. The man was later identified, arrested, and charged with theft using violence, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of nine years in Indonesia. Fortunately, the woman’s stolen necklace was recovered.

Local police have increased night-time patrols along the Legian to Seminyak strip while warning tourists to exercise caution. Bali Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ariasandy emphasized the importance of personal safety for visitors:

  • Tourists should take better care of their own safety
  • Avoid traveling alone
  • Avoid wearing conspicuous jewelry
  • At a minimum, walk with a companion

“In other words, they need to pay attention to their own self-protection. They should avoid creating opportunities for criminals.”

Authorities are working to ensure the safety of tourists, but it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and follow these guidelines to minimize the risk of becoming victims of crime.
