Paraguay Files Official Complaint with FIFA Over Bellingham’s Case
Paraguay has reportedly submitted an official complaint to FIFA regarding the disciplinary actions taken against players during the World Cup. The issue centers around England player Jude Bellingham, who was not red-carded or banned for a similar action that led to the suspension of Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron.
Almiron is set to miss his team’s crucial match against the Socceroos on Friday after he was shown a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to a Turkish player. This incident has brought attention to a new rule introduced by FIFA, which prohibits players from covering their mouth with their hand or jersey when engaging in confrontational communication with opponents. The purpose of this rule is to prevent the use of derogatory language during matches.
Almiron’s actions violated the new regulation, resulting in a one-game suspension. However, controversy has arisen as Bellingham, who was seen covering his mouth while speaking to Ghana forward Jordan Ayew after England’s 0-0 draw on Tuesday, did not face the same consequences. According to reports, FIFA determined that Bellingham’s actions were not in a confrontational context, thus avoiding any sanctions.
This discrepancy has led to frustration within the Paraguay Football Association, which has made a formal complaint about the situation. Despite this, it remains unclear what specific outcome Paraguay is seeking, as Almiron’s ban is unlikely to be overturned.
Qatar Player Receives Five-Match Suspension
In another incident, Qatari player Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match suspension for a tackle that resulted in a serious injury to Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné. The incident occurred during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar last week, where Madibo was shown a red card for the dangerous challenge.
The FIFA disciplinary committee has since imposed a five-match ban on Madibo, citing the severity of the foul play. Koné sustained a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg and has been ruled out of the tournament. Madibo will serve his suspension after the World Cup, as Qatar has already been eliminated and will not progress to the Round of 32.
Socceroos Face Suspension Challenges
The Socceroos are also dealing with their own suspension issues, as several players are at risk of being banned if they receive additional yellow cards. Harry Souttar, Alessandro Circati, and Jordan Bos are all on yellow cards and could face a ban if they pick up another one in the upcoming match against Paraguay.
Jacob Italiano was also close to a suspension but will not play against Paraguay due to an adductor injury. Similarly, Mathew Leckie has been ruled out because of a hamstring issue. If any of Souttar, Circati, or Bos receive a yellow card against Paraguay, they will be suspended for the Round of 32. However, Italiano is safe, as the yellow cards will be reset after the final group game.
