The Controversial Decision to Replace Nettles with Rhaena Targaryen
The Season 3 premiere of House of the Dragon has sparked intense discussions among fans, not just about the dragons but also about the show’s decision to remove a character from the source material. Longtime readers of Fire & Blood have been debating the absence of Nettles and how her storyline was transferred to Rhaena Targaryen. Showrunner Ryan Condal has finally addressed this change, explaining that it was not just about removing a character but expanding one who had been waiting for her moment since Season 1.
Why Rhaena Took Over Nettles’ Storyline
In Fire & Blood, Nettles is a dragonseed who bonds with the wild dragon Sheepstealer and participates in the Battle of the Gullet. However, the show removes Nettles entirely and transfers much of her storyline to Daemon Targaryen’s daughter, Rhaena. According to Condal, the series is ultimately a family story, making it more meaningful to expand an established Targaryen character, especially one whose arc has revolved around being the only dragonless member of her family since Season 1.
Condal explained that Rhaena finally claiming a dragon fulfilled her greatest wish, only for it to quickly become her greatest nightmare. “She gets her great wish and it becomes her greatest nightmare,” he told IGN. This shift has left some book readers divided, as they may feel that Nettles’ absence is a loss.
The Impact on the Battle of the Gullet
Rhaena’s dream quickly turns into a nightmare during the Battle of the Gullet. No sooner does she claim Sheepstealer than the untamed dragon throws the battlefield into chaos, inadvertently pushing Jace and Vermax toward their doom. Meanwhile, Baela’s unexpected presence in the battle gives her a devastating front-row view of her betrothed’s final moments, adding yet another emotional wound to an already catastrophic day for the Black.
However, Nettles is not the only casualty of HBO’s adaptation, as the Battle of the Gullet itself arrives with several major departures from Martin’s source material.
Other Major Changes in the Battle of the Gullet
Perhaps the biggest omission involves Prince Aegon III and Prince Viserys II, who play a crucial role in the book’s version of the battle. In Fire & Blood, the young princes are caught in the conflict while sailing to Pentos, leading to Viserys’ disappearance and a storyline that eventually shapes the future of House Targaryen. The series removes that entire sequence, largely because both characters are significantly younger in the adaptation and had already been sent away before the battle began. As a result, Stormcloud’s heroic rescue flight and Viserys’ famous “lost prince” arc are absent from the show.
The HBO adaptation also expands the roles of several other characters while rewriting key outcomes. Baela Targaryen and her dragon, Moondancer, actively participate in the battle despite not doing so in the book, giving her a front-row seat to Jace’s death. Lord Corlys Velaryon likewise joins the fighting rather than remaining on the sidelines, while Sharako Lohar meets an early end at the hands of Alyn of Hull despite surviving the battle in Martin’s version.
What’s Next for Rhaena?
Thus, if Ryan Condal’s explanation is any indication, Rhaena’s story is only getting started, even if it came at the expense of one of Fire & Blood’s most beloved characters.
