Dench: A Co-Star’s ‘Mischief Maker’ Tale

Rosamund Pike Crowns Dame Judi Dench “Finest Actress,” Praises Christian Bale’s “Method”

Rosamund Pike, the acclaimed 47-year-old actress known for her captivating performances in blockbusters like Gone Girl and the recent critically lauded Saltburn, has shared her profound admiration for her acting peers. In a candid conversation with comedian Romesh Ranganathan on BBC Radio 2, Pike didn’t hold back in her praise, singling out Dame Judi Dench as the “finest actress” she has ever had the privilege of collaborating with. Pike affectionately described the legendary Dame Judi as a “mischief maker,” a testament to her vibrant personality both on and off the stage.

Pike’s professional history with Dame Judi Dench includes a 2009 London production of Madame de Sade and a shared screen in the iconic 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day. Reflecting on these experiences, Pike lauded Dench for her “delightful” nature and her extraordinary talent for effortlessly embodying her characters. “She’s so delightful. She’s so, so good,” Pike enthused. She further elaborated on Dench’s mastery, suggesting that a simple listen to her recite a Shakespearean sonnet on YouTube would be enough to move an audience to tears, showcasing the sheer power and beauty of her command over the English language.

Pike painted a vivid picture of Dench’s on-set persona, highlighting the contrast between her professional gravitas and her playful off-stage demeanour. “She’s just amazing and yet, when you’re doing a play with her, she’s so funny, she’s so naughty. Off stage, she’s completely out of character, laughing, playing a practical joke, and then she walks on and it’s all there.” This ability to switch seamlessly from lightheartedness to profound performance is, for Pike, a hallmark of true genius.

Christian Bale: The “Method” Master

Shifting her focus to the male acting fraternity, Pike also reserved high praise for Christian Bale, the intense star of American Psycho. Pike and Bale shared the screen in the 2017 Western film Hostiles. However, Pike admitted that her interaction with Bale was largely with the character he portrayed, rather than the man himself, owing to his well-documented dedication to method acting.

“He’s another level,” Pike remarked, acknowledging Bale’s unique approach. “I can’t say I know him really, but it was just a pretty amazing experience to be around him in a film called Hostiles, but I don’t think I met Christian, I think I only met the character. He’s quite method. He’s very method.”

Pike expanded on Bale’s unwavering commitment to his craft, emphasizing the profound level of truth, integrity, and sheer dedication he brings to his roles. “It’s just the level of truth, the level of commitment, integrity, truth. It’s the sort of depth of it all the time,” she explained. She believes Bale possesses an incredible ability to remain impervious to external pressures and distractions. “I think he just doesn’t give anything away. I think he’s not someone who’s fallen victim to the thing of needing to be liked. I don’t think he’s at all interested in his own image in the press or anything. I think he just does the work and has been able to do it since he was very young. I think he shuts out all the noise really well and creates the space he needs. His performances are just astounding.”

Contrasting Approaches to Acting Excellence

Pike offered a fascinating insight into the diverse pathways to acting excellence, contrasting Bale’s immersive technique with her own more fluid approach. “I’ve seen both ways of total excellence, and I think I can go quite up to the last minute being silly and then switch on,” she revealed. This suggests a personal ability to maintain a degree of detachment while still achieving peak performance when required.

Beyond her notable roles in Gone Girl, the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and the recent provocative hit Saltburn, Rosamund Pike is gearing up for her return to the West End stage. She is set to star in the production of Inter Alia, which will run at Wyndham’s Theatre from March 19th to June 20th. This upcoming theatre engagement promises another opportunity for audiences to witness Pike’s versatile talent.
