£40k Shopping & Gambling Secret: A Husband’s Shock

From Debt to Dollars: Mum’s Incredible Comeback Selling Pre-Loved Threads

A mum from Wales has turned her life around, completely eradicating a staggering £40,000 debt within a single year by selling second-hand clothes. What began as a way to cope with depression in 2020 spiralled into a crippling addiction to online gambling and compulsive shopping, leading Rachel Grady, 41, to spend money meant for her children on her habits. Now, she’s not only debt-free but is also raking in an impressive £10,000 a month as a full-time reseller.

Rachel’s journey into addiction began innocently enough. A bout of depression left her feeling lost, and she discovered that the “buzz” from gambling offered a temporary escape. What started as a curious one-off quickly morphed into a daily ritual. Within months, she found herself hooked, visiting online gambling sites with alarming frequency.

“I was in a pretty dark place for quite a few years,” Rachel shared. “The only thing that made me happy at the time was spending money I didn’t have. I would gamble on mobile apps. I tried it once out of curiosity and before I knew it, I was visiting gambling sites daily. It became part of my routine.”

The allure of a quick win, coupled with the dopamine rush, fuelled her descent. While she experienced some initial wins, they were short-lived, and the losses mounted. Before she knew it, Rachel had haemorrhaged £15,000 to online gambling platforms.

But the gambling addiction was only one part of her financial woes. Simultaneously, Rachel developed a serious shopping habit, racking up an additional £25,000 across five credit cards and two loans. This dual addiction meant she was actively depriving her children of necessities, choosing to fund her own destructive habits instead.

“I had five credit cards and two loans and ended up £40,000 in debt,” she explained. “The kids would ask for things, and I’d say no but then I’d spend money on things I didn’t need. It was so selfish.”

The secret life took its toll, creating immense strain on her marriage. Rachel would borrow money from her husband, too ashamed to confess the true extent of her financial entanglement.

The breaking point came in 2023. Overwhelmed and unable to continue the charade, Rachel confided in a friend about her massive debt and her inability to provide for her children. This emotional breakdown was the catalyst for change.

Recognising her knack for selling, Rachel decided to channel her energy into something productive. Inspired by her own ability to spot a bargain, she likens herself to “a bit of Del Boy,” a nod to the iconic British market trader known for his entrepreneurial spirit. She began by purchasing bundles of clothing from eBay and reselling them for a profit on platforms like Vinted.

“I realised I’ve always been good at selling things,” Rachel said. “So I started buying bundles of clothes off eBay, and then reselling them for profit. It started off slow, I was making around £2k a month, and I paid off my smallest amount of debt.”

This initial success provided a glimmer of hope. The modest profits allowed her to chip away at her smallest debts, building momentum and confidence.

The Tilt Revolution: A Game Changer for Rachel

The real turning point came in October 2024 when Rachel discovered Tilt, a live-selling platform. This innovative model allowed sellers to host live auctions, creating an engaging and interactive shopping experience. Rachel’s natural salesmanship shone through, and her pre-loved clothing business, which she eventually named “Rachel’s Vintage Moonstone,” began to flourish.

The live auctions proved to be incredibly lucrative. By January, Rachel was pulling in £1,000 per auction and, by extension, an astonishing £10,000 a month. This dramatic increase in income transformed her from a struggling debtor into a thriving entrepreneur, enabling her to become a full-time reseller.

“Then I joined the live selling platform Tilt, I was making £10k a month, it was crazy,” she exclaimed. The rapid financial turnaround was almost unbelievable.

Rachel diligently channelled all her earnings back into debt repayment. Incredibly, by October 2025 – just one year after joining Tilt – she had successfully paid off the entirety of her £40,000 debt.

A New Chapter: Frugality and Freedom

With her financial freedom secured, Rachel’s perspective on money and spending has undergone a radical transformation. She is now fiercely frugal, only purchasing items she truly needs. More importantly, she has implemented robust measures to block access to gambling sites, effectively severing ties with her past addiction.

The revelation of her debt to her husband, which she finally shared after it was completely cleared, was met with surprise but also understanding. “He was really shocked when he found out, but he’d noticed such a difference in me in that year, and I’d paid it off, so he took it quite well,” Rachel recounted.

Rachel’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, the potential of the circular economy, and the ability to overcome even the most daunting challenges. She now shares her journey and her curated vintage finds on her Instagram page, @rachel_vintagemoonstone, inspiring others who may be struggling with similar issues.
