“Even a single course of treatment with certain types of antibiotics leaves traces,” stated Gabriel Baldanzi from Uppsala University. The research, published in the esteemed journal Nature Medicine, analyzed patient data spanning nearly 15,000 individuals over an eight-year period. The findings revealed a significant correlation between past antibiotic use and the current composition of a person’s gut microbiome.

“We can see that antibiotic use as far back as four to eight years ago is linked to the composition of a person’s gut microbiome today,” Baldanzi elaborated. This suggests that the disruption caused by antibiotics can have a prolonged ripple effect, influencing the balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut for years after the medication has been taken.

The researchers embarked on this study to address a critical knowledge gap. “Antibiotics are known gut microbiome disruptors, but their long-term consequences remain underexplored,” the team explained in their paper. Specific Antibiotics and Their Impact
