Ole Miss Season Ends: Beard’s NIT Outlook

The Ole Miss men’s basketball team’s postseason fate remains undecided following a hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful run in the SEC Tournament. Head Coach Chris Beard indicated that a decision on whether the Rebels will participate in another postseason tournament has not yet been made.

The team’s SEC Tournament journey concluded on March 14th at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, where they fell to No. 3 seed Arkansas in a nail-biting 93-90 overtime thriller in the semifinals. This intense matchup marked the fourth game in as many days for the Ole Miss squad, a testament to their resilience and determination throughout the tournament.

Despite a commendable performance that saw them secure victories against formidable opponents like No. 10 Texas, No. 7 Georgia, and No. 2 Alabama, the Rebels finished the season with a 15-20 overall record. This record places them outside the consideration for the prestigious NCAA Tournament, commonly known as March Madness.

Following the semifinal loss, Coach Beard was directly asked about the team’s potential interest in participating in alternative postseason tournaments, such as the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) or the College Basketball Crown. The NIT typically invites 32 teams, while the College Basketball Crown, which has attracted prominent programs like Villanova and USC in recent years, extends invitations to eight teams.

“I haven’t even thought about that yet,” Beard stated in his post-game press conference. “This is the first time it’s even been mentioned to me.” This response suggests that the immediate focus after the demanding SEC Tournament was on the team’s performance and the conclusion of their conference play, rather than future tournament possibilities.

To have secured an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss would have needed to win the SEC Tournament championship game. Had they achieved this, they would have made history as the first high-major team to earn an automatic bid with a losing record, highlighting the unique circumstances of their season.

This marks the second instance in Coach Beard’s three seasons at Ole Miss where the team has missed out on the NCAA Tournament. In the previous instance, during the 2024 season, the Rebels did not participate in any postseason tournament. The decision for this season will likely depend on various factors, including player availability, team morale, and the overall program’s direction for the upcoming year. The possibility of extending the season, even in a less prominent tournament, could offer valuable experience and development opportunities for the young Ole Miss squad. The coaching staff will undoubtedly weigh these considerations carefully before making a final determination.
