Inside Molly Meldrum’s Private Health Battle: A Beloved Icon’s New Chapter
Australia’s legendary music guru, Ian “Molly” Meldrum, has largely stepped away from the public eye over the past year, but sources close to the 83-year-old industry titan reveal he is facing significant health challenges. Despite his withdrawal from public life, those closest to him maintain that Meldrum is in good spirits, surrounded by a devoted circle of friends and family who provide him with “around-the-clock” care at his home.
“He’s surrounded by close friends who adore him, and his famous wicked sense of humour hasn’t dulled one bit,” a confidante shared. “He’s cared for around the clock, supported, safe, and deeply loved. And even now, he remains unmistakably, wonderfully Molly. Since stepping back from public life, he’s somehow become even more delightfully chaotic. There’s always a story, always a laugh, always that spark.”
Meldrum’s reduced public presence was highlighted when he was absent from a September 2024 event celebrating the 50th anniversary of Countdown, the iconic ABC music show that propelled him to stardom. He was scheduled to attend the launch of a commemorative coin honouring the program’s half-century milestone, where he served as the charismatic host. Instead, Meldrum issued a statement expressing his fond memories of the show and its impact on the Australian music industry.
“I am left with such fond memories of those days and a show that will never be forgotten,” his statement read. “We made a difference to the music industry in Australia and so I am thrilled to see commemorative coin being made.”
The roots of Meldrum’s ongoing health struggles can be traced back to a serious fall from a ladder in December 2011. This incident resulted in an acquired brain injury and nearly cost him his life, according to former Countdown announcer Gavin Wood.
“The fall, it is all down to the fall, was a horrible thing to have happened,” Wood commented. “He has been a public figure all his life and I think he is just enjoying a quieter life. He is still Molly, still interested in music and still has it turned up to 11. He is still naughty, he has still got that spark that we love, but I think he is enjoying life being a normal person.”
Concern for Meldrum’s wellbeing has been a recurring theme among friends and family, particularly following a series of public incidents in recent years that garnered significant media attention.
Approximately 18 months ago, Meldrum made headlines for an unfortunate appearance at a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne, which involved exposing himself and appearing to urinate on the floor. Musician Russell Morris, who was once managed by Meldrum, described the situation as a “train wreck” and offered insight into his old friend’s mindset.
“He’s doing OK. He’s not young anymore,” Morris stated. “He wants to live his life, that’s the problem, he doesn’t want someone to put him in a home or something, so he just decides to go out… He just does what he wants to do. And consequently, it’s a train wreck sometimes.”
Further public scrutiny followed in January 2023 when Meldrum mooned the crowd at Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. He later apologised, attributing the act to a wardrobe malfunction. Footage also emerged of a similar incident at the 2022 ChillOut Festival in Daylesford, Victoria. Actor Samuel Johnson publicly expressed his frustration, urging Meldrum to “hang up his hat. Now.”

However, those closest to Meldrum suggest there’s a deeper narrative beyond these public spectacles. His reclusive status has recently been punctuated by the release of Four Weddings And An Encore, a new memoir by music industry executive Amanda Pelman. Pelman, who shared a home with Meldrum in Richmond and worked with him at their pop-centric record label, Melodian, offers a unique perspective on his life.
“If I didn’t have a boyfriend, I had Molly Meldrum,” Pelman wrote in her memoir. “He was my ‘Mouldy Mildew’. I was his ‘Attila the Hen’.” She painted a picture of their home life as a perpetual party, recalling nights when international music royalty like Stevie Nicks and Bob Dylan were guests.
Despite acknowledging Meldrum’s health challenges, Pelman insists he remains mentally sharp. “He is cognisant,” she said. “He has the acquired brain injury from the fall, but Molly still has his sharp wit.” She reflected, “What an amazing life.”

While Molly Meldrum may have retreated from the glare of the spotlight, the essence of the personality that made him a household name remains, according to those who know him best. The spark that defined his career is still very much alive, even as he navigates this new, private chapter of his life with the unwavering support of his loved ones.
