Eric Dane’s devastated girlfriend breaks silence on his ALS death

A Heartbreaking Farewell: Remembering Eric Dane’s Final Year

The entertainment world is in mourning following the passing of beloved actor Eric Dane, who died at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His loss has been deeply felt by fans, friends, and particularly by his girlfriend, Janell Shirtcliff, who has shared poignant memories of their time together in the year leading up to his death.

Dane, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed ‘McSteamy,’ on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, had publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis less than a year before his passing. ALS, often referred to in America as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a devastating and incurable neurodegenerative condition that progressively impairs the nervous system, leading to increasing muscle paralysis.

While Dane and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, had separated in 2017, they maintained a close and amicable co-parenting relationship for their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. Their divorce proceedings were ultimately halted just prior to Dane’s announcement of his ALS diagnosis, highlighting their enduring bond. Gayheart remained a steadfast source of support for Dane throughout his illness, even as they both continued to see other people, including Dane’s relationship with model Janell Shirtcliff.

Shirtcliff, 42, has offered a deeply moving tribute to Dane, sharing a collection of photographs and videos that capture intimate moments from their last year together. These snapshots showcase Dane’s signature charm, including images of him sporting his unmistakable smile while getting a tattoo and sharing laughter with Shirtcliff.

One particularly touching video depicts the couple on a road trip, seemingly through a desert landscape, as they joyfully sing along to the classic Dire Straits track “Money for Nothing.” The footage also captures tender moments, such as Dane holding Shirtcliff close and gently kissing her temple as they posed together. The tribute concludes with a heartwarming video of a young girl meticulously arranging Dane’s pose for a photograph, a sweet testament to the love and connection he shared.

Shirtcliff was by Dane’s side when he attended his final red carpet event on June 18th in Los Angeles, a poignant occasion just eight months before his death. At the time, reports suggested that his appearance with Shirtcliff had come as a surprise to a previous girlfriend, Priya Jain, as Dane had not formally ended their relationship.

However, a recent insider has revealed that in the months leading up to Eric’s passing, he and Priya Jain had reconnected as friends. The source indicated that Jain was taken aback by the rapid progression of Dane’s illness, stating she “didn’t think it would happen this quickly.”

This insider further shared that Jain was “so sad and devastated” by Dane’s death but expressed gratitude that his daughters “exist to keep his memory alive.”

In the wake of Dane’s passing, friends of the actor have organised a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for his children. As of Saturday morning, the campaign had raised over $183,000 towards its $250,000 goal.

Adding to the outpouring of support, it has been revealed that actor Johnny Depp offered a significant gesture of kindness by allowing Dane to stay at one of his homes during his ALS battle, aiming to alleviate some of the financial strain. “He was living basically rent-free in one of the homes Johnny owns above the Sunset Strip. He told Eric to pay whatever he could or — couldn’t for rent,” a source disclosed, noting that this arrangement provided Dane with “one less thing to worry about.”

Dane’s health had visibly declined following his diagnosis, necessitating the use of a wheelchair and impacting the use of his right arm. He had withdrawn from a planned public appearance the previous month, citing the “physical realities” imposed by his illness.

Despite these challenges, Dane, whose recent work includes portraying the father of Jacob Elordi’s character in the acclaimed series Euphoria, remained resolute in his desire to continue acting. In a virtual panel for IAMALS.org as recently as December, he expressed his determination, stating, “I still have my brain and I still have my speech. I’m not about to concede my purpose for some disease.” His unwavering spirit and dedication to his craft serve as an inspiration, even as the world mourns the loss of this talented actor.
