Mexico Travel Warning: Cancel Your Holiday? What You Need to Know

Travel Alert Issued for Brits in Mexico Following Cartel Leader’s Death and Subsequent Unrest

British travellers currently in Mexico have been urged to exercise extreme caution following a significant escalation of violence across several states, triggered by the reported death of a major drug cartel leader. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most formidable criminal organisations, has been severely disrupted by the demise of its alleged chief, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho.” The Mexican army announced his killing in the state of Jalisco, an event that has since precipitated a wave of violent incidents, including widespread roadblocks, vehicles being set alight, and tourists caught in the crossfire near key transport hubs like Guadalajara airport.

What Prompted the Travel Advisory?

The UK Foreign Office issued an updated travel advisory on February 22nd, highlighting serious security incidents that erupted across the state of Jalisco. These events, which occurred in areas such as Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, were a direct consequence of a federal law-enforcement operation targeting organised crime in the municipality of Tapalpa.

Authorities in Puerto Vallarta have taken the drastic step of issuing a public advisory, strongly recommending that residents and visitors remain indoors. Reports indicate that routes leading to airports have been obstructed, and intercity road travel across affected states has been severely hampered by blockades.

Guidance for Travellers in Mexico

The advisory from GOV.UK underscores the need for travellers to adopt a highly cautious approach. It strongly advises individuals to adhere strictly to the guidance provided by local authorities. This includes heeding any orders to stay indoors and avoiding non-essential travel within the affected regions.

Travellers are encouraged to:

  • Monitor local media: Stay informed about the developing situation by regularly checking local news sources.
  • Follow official advice: Pay close attention to and comply with instructions from authorities and local transport operators before making any travel decisions.
  • Exercise caution with intercity travel: If intercity road travel is deemed necessary, it is recommended to undertake journeys during daylight hours.
  • Maintain vigilance: Regardless of your location within Mexico, it is crucial to remain alert and follow local security advice as the situation evolves.

Flight Disruptions and Airport Status

The ensuing violence has led to significant disruptions in air travel, with numerous flights cancelled and at least one major airport temporarily ceasing operations, leaving many tourists stranded.

Puerto Vallarta International Airport: This airport announced the cancellation of all international operations and the majority of domestic flights on Sunday, February 22nd, 2026. The airport’s X account stated that it was under the protection of personnel from the National Guard (GN) and the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) as part of ongoing federal coordination efforts. Despite the security presence, the decision to cancel flights was made by the airlines themselves.

According to reports from The Independent, at least 30 flights destined for Puerto Vallarta from airports in the US, Mexico, and Canada were either forced to return to their origin or were diverted to alternative destinations.

Guadalajara International Airport: Passengers travelling through Guadalajara’s international airport were informed that operations were being conducted with limited personnel due to the ongoing security concerns. The airport clarified via its X account that no incidents had occurred within its facilities and that there was no risk to passengers, employees, or visitors. Crucially, no flights from Guadalajara have reportedly been cancelled or affected by the disruptions.

Travel Insurance Implications

For travellers considering cancelling their trips due to the unrest, understanding travel insurance coverage is paramount. The UK Foreign Office’s advisory currently does not recommend against all travel to Mexico, but rather targets specific regions experiencing heightened violence.

  • Partial Advisories: If your travel insurance policy is contingent on a government advisory against all travel to a country, and the current advisory only covers specific regions, cancelling your trip may not be covered.
  • Consult Your Insurer: It is highly recommended to contact your travel insurance provider directly to discuss any concerns and clarify your policy’s terms and conditions regarding cancellations due to security incidents.
  • Affected Areas: If you are booked to travel to an area that has a new warning or is directly impacted by the recent escalation, you may be eligible for compensation if you plan to postpone or cancel your trip. However, for travel to unaffected areas, claiming a refund is unlikely.

The situation remains fluid, and travellers are strongly advised to stay updated through official channels and local news to ensure their safety and make informed decisions about their travel plans.
