Barry Manilow Reflects on Life, Loss, and the Fragility of Health After Cancer Battle
Legendary entertainer Barry Manilow, now 82, has opened up about the profound impact of his lung cancer diagnosis, admitting that the ordeal has left him feeling irrevocably changed. In a candid interview, the beloved singer shared his reflections on mortality and the unsettling sensation of losing a part of himself, both physically and emotionally, due to the medical battle he faced.
“You just don’t even think about [how fragile life is],” Manilow confessed. “And suddenly, you have lung cancer. But I’m still here. I’m not all here; there’s part of me that isn’t here — they took out a part of me, and now I’ve got to figure out, ‘What do I do?’”
The singer’s journey with cancer began in December 2025, when an MRI on his lungs revealed a concerning anomaly. He credits his physician with saving his life, as the cancerous growth presented no discernible symptoms. “If he hadn’t done that, man … [The doctor] saved my life, because there’s no symptoms for what I had,” Manilow recalled. “I could go on, nothing hurt — but they found the dot in my lung.” The initial call from his doctor, delivering the news, was met with disbelief and defiance. “They called me and said, ‘Could be cancer.’ That’s a bad word. ‘Not me. F— you. I can’t have cancer.’”
Medical professionals were unable to determine precisely how long the cancer had been present in Manilow’s body. “It could have been years,” the artist expressed. “If it had gone any further, then I would be up s—’s creek. It just so happened that it hadn’t spread, and boy oh boy, I thought I might be dying.” Manilow admits to having no recollection of the “nightmare” lobectomy surgery required to remove the affected portion of his lung. Fortunately, he was spared the need for chemotherapy or radiation treatments. “I’m one of the lucky ones; I don’t have to have chemo, radiation and all that stuff,” he stated.
A Renewed Appreciation for Life
Despite the harrowing experience, Manilow, who is set to release his new album, What a Time, in June, is embracing his talents with renewed vigour now that he is cancer-free. The health scare has prompted a deep introspection, leading him to re-evaluate his life and career. “It has really, really made me take stock of my life,” he revealed. “This made me stop and think about: Have I done what I wanted to do, and have I made people happy? Have I been a good friend? All of those cornball things that I’ve read for all of my life, I started to think about that, too. It really did stop me in my tracks.” The singer found solace and affirmation in the answers. “And the answers are yes. And as a matter of fact, there are more yeses than I ever thought.”
Manilow acknowledged the profound impact of his diagnosis. “[Cancer] really rocked me, but I’m getting stronger.”
The Public Announcement and Recovery
The initial announcement of his lung cancer diagnosis sent ripples through the entertainment world. On December 22, 2025, Manilow took to Instagram to inform his fans about his upcoming surgery. He explained that following a prolonged period of bronchitis, his doctor recommended an MRI to ensure everything was in order. “As many of you know I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks. Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK,” he wrote at the time. “The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news.”
Manilow reassured his followers that the doctors believed the cancer had not spread and that further tests were underway to confirm this. He also confirmed that he would not require chemotherapy or radiation, opting instead for a period of rest and recovery. “The doctors do not believe it has spread and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns,” he quipped. The recovery period necessitated the rescheduling of his January arena concerts, a decision made to prioritise his health.
The experience has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on Barry Manilow, shaping his perspective on life and reinforcing the importance of cherishing every moment.
