Karl Stefanovic’s Exit from Nine Network: A Surprise for Some, a Prediction for Others
As the entertainment industry grapples with the news that Karl Stefanovic is in talks to leave the Nine Network, one person might not have been entirely taken aback by the development—his Today co-host, Sarah Abo.
According to reports, Nine has reportedly cut ties with Karl following a controversial podcast interview he conducted with far-right figure Tommy Robinson. The episode, which was initially released on his independent podcast The Karl Stefanovic Show, was pulled from streaming platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Apple just 12 hours after its release. Pauline Hanson later uploaded the full episode to her YouTube channel, claiming, “It looks like they are trying to sack my good friend Karl Stefanovic! With six months to go on his contract, the weak management of Channel 9 want to sack Karl over this interview.”
A spokesperson for Nine responded to the situation, stating, “The Karl Stefanovic Show is a completely independent production. Nine has no involvement, including in the guest selection and other editorial processes. However, Nine is taking this matter seriously.”
Sarah Abo’s Eerie Prediction
While Karl prepares for what could be the end of his 20-year career at Nine, it appears that Sarah Abo may have unintentionally predicted the fallout. Less than a week ago, she posted a selfie from the Channel Nine offices, highlighting the wider Today team, with Karl notably absent.
“Part of the fabulous brains trust behind 3.5 hours of live television on The Today Show every morning. Working around the clock! What a team!” she wrote, adding that the photo was taken at 3am.
Karl, who was in the UK recording his podcast, quickly commented, saying, “Why did you cut me out of the brains trust?” to which Sarah replied, “I mean, isn’t it obvious?”
At the time, the exchange seemed lighthearted, but now it appears Sarah may have subtly foreshadowed the end of her working relationship with Karl after more than three years as co-hosts.
What’s Next for Karl Stefanovic?
According to The Australian, insiders suggest that Karl’s controversial podcast content might be a deliberate strategy to stir up controversy. It’s speculated that Karl may not mind receiving a payout for the remainder of his contract so he can focus on his individual pursuits full-time.
Life after Today seems promising for the star. He has joined forces with Eddie Maguire for a multi-platform deal with ARN, and The Karl Stefanovic Show has already increased to five episodes per week.
“If he clicks, then he’ll be the frontrunner to helm ARN’s breakfast radio show in 2027, most probably with a female co-host,” journalist James Madden wrote in a commentary piece for The Australian in May.
“Sandilands out, Stefanovic in. And for much less than $10m a year.”
