Critical Reception of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The latest film in the Mario franchise, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, has received a mixed response from critics. As a sequel to the 2023 hit Super Mario Bros Movie, it is based on the highly acclaimed games Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Despite this strong foundation, the movie has not met the expectations set by its predecessors.
At the time of writing, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie holds a MetaCritic score of 37 out of 100, based on 35 critic reviews, and a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 44 per cent from 84 reviews. This suggests that the film has not resonated with critics as strongly as some of the previous entries in the series.
Mixed Reviews and Fan Reactions
Critics have pointed out that while there are clear moments of fan service, the storyline and character development fall short. In her review for The Independent, Clarisse Loughrey gave the film two stars out of five and remarked: “There’s barely a plot here. Not a single memorable character. Not even another piano ditty for Jack Black to sing.”
She described the film as “a series of large, vaguely connected explosions that Mario, his bro Luigi and his love interest Princess Peach can land in front of in a superhero pose.” This critique highlights the lack of depth in the narrative and characters, which many viewers found disappointing.
However, user scores could still improve as more reviews come in. For comparison, the first Super Mario Bros Movie had a Metascore of 46 but a user score of 8.1. On Rotten Tomatoes, it had a Tomatometer of 59 per cent but a Popcornmeter (user score) of 95 per cent. This suggests that while early reviews may be harsh, audience opinions could shift over time.
Fan Reactions on the Mario Subreddit
The film’s low critic scores have sparked reactions on the Mario Subreddit. One original poster (OP) expressed their disappointment, stating, “this hurts so much.” Fans have shared a range of responses, with some acknowledging the criticism but still planning to watch the film.
One fan said: “Look, I already bought my tickets so I’m not gonna let critics’ opinions affect my own decisions. But I’m still disappointed that these movies haven’t strived to be more than fan-service fests.”
Another commented: “I mean, reviews weren’t great for the first one either. It is 59 per cent now but it was lower when it was just the early reviews came out. For Galaxy, it could go up more as more reviews come in too. Although, I guess it could go down more as well.”
Some fans remain neutral, with one saying: “Eh I’ll come to my own conclusions when I watch it myself,” while another added: “Guys, it’s Illumination. They make 90 minute speedrun movies. It’s mostly for kids but will be a pleasant run for people that aren’t looking for anything ‘meaningful’. It’s pretty much the exact opposite type of movie that critics rate highly.”
What’s Next?
Despite the mixed critical reception, The Super Mario Bros Movie is currently in cinemas, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment. While the initial reviews may not be favorable, the final verdict could change as more audiences see the film.
