Paul Townend Faces Crucial Decision for Randox Grand National
Paul Townend, one of the most respected jockeys in the world of jump racing, is currently weighing his options for the upcoming Randox Grand National. The decision on which horse he will ride is something he plans to leave as late as possible, according to his own words.
Townend recently made history by securing a record fifth Cheltenham Gold Cup victory aboard Gaelic Warrior. Now, he must decide whether to continue with I Am Maximus, the horse that brought him success in the 2024 Grand National and was also on board when the pair finished second last season. Alternatively, he could switch to Grangeclare West, who came in third in the previous year’s race.
The competition between these two horses has been incredibly close. Last year, there was only half a length separating them as they chased after Nick Rockett, another Willie Mullins-trained horse. This year, it seems likely that Patrick Mullins, the trainer’s son, will be riding Nick Rockett again.
A Tough Choice
Townend shared his thoughts on the matter during an interview with Betfair. “Somebody asked me the other day who I’d be riding and whether there was a decision to be made, and my response was – in these big races, there is always a decision to be made,” he said.
He acknowledged the emotional attachment to I Am Maximus, who gave him one of his greatest days in the saddle two years ago. However, he admitted that there wouldn’t be much difference between the two horses on paper. “You really have to try and take sentiment out of it.”
Townend emphasized the importance of the ground conditions, stating that this factor could significantly influence his decision. “It’s probably a decision that I’ll leave as late as possible, as I’d say the ground will have a big bearing on it. We can’t get ahead of ourselves, though, and we just have to try and get both horses to Aintree fit and firing, and if we can do that, then they both go there with big chances once again.”
I Am Maximus: A Strong Contender
I Am Maximus is currently the 15-2 favorite with Betway to become the first horse to win a second Grand National since Red Rum. The legendary Red Rum won three times between 1973 and 1977, making this a historic opportunity for I Am Maximus.
Townend has had great success with I Am Maximus, but he’s also had a strong relationship with Grangeclare West. The latter is a 10-1 shot with Betway, and Townend has been aboard him in five out of six races. Most recently, he guided Grangeclare West to a victory in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse in February.
Looking Ahead
As the Randox Grand National approaches, all eyes are on Townend and the choices he will make. Both I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West have strong credentials, and their performance will depend heavily on how the ground turns out.
For now, Townend remains focused on ensuring both horses are in top condition for the race. With his experience and track record, whatever decision he makes is sure to be well-informed and strategic.
