If you’re a fan of the BBC’s hit series The Capture, starring Holliday Grainger, then you’ll be pleased to know there’s another show that might fill the gap while you wait for the next season. Season 3 of The Capture was released last month, but with episodes dropping weekly, it’s easy to feel like you’re left with a thriller-shaped hole in your schedule on the other six nights of the week.
Fear not, because there’s a great alternative waiting for you. Homeland is available on Channel 4’s free streaming service and shares several key elements with The Capture, making it a must-watch for fans of the BBC thriller. On Reddit, user 10thisisathr0waway10 noted that the two shows are “very similar.” Both explore themes of surveillance, technology, and conspiracy, and both feature strong female investigators at their core. In The Capture, this is Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger), and in Homeland, it’s Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes.
Carrie Mathison is a determined CIA officer whose instincts drive key investigations throughout the show’s eight seasons. In the first season, Mathison becomes suspicious that Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), a US Marine who has returned home after seven years missing in action, has been radicalized by the terrorist group al-Qaeda and poses a threat to the country’s security.
The show premiered in 2011 and quickly became a massive hit with audiences. The first season received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, with glowing reviews from viewers. Pham L said: “The plot is gripping and the acting is excellent. Not a single moment feels overdramatic.” They added, “It’s probably the best show I’ve watched in the past five years, especially if you’re interested in the complexities of US-Middle East relations in today’s world.”
Roberto D called the show his “favourite series of all time.” They continued: “There’s something truly special about it – a depth, an energy, a tension that never fades, even after eight seasons.”
Matt S also praised the show: “This show is one of the best ever! It never gets boring and I’ve lost so much sleep because of it.” The series ran until 2020, when it finally concluded for good.
