Vaughan and Doull: Gaikwad Feels Threatened by Samson

Rising Pressure on Chennai Super Kings Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a team with a rich history of success in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is currently facing a challenging start to the 2026 season. The five-time champions have lost their first two matches, and this has put significant pressure on their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite being a key player for the team, Gaikwad has yet to deliver a standout batting performance, raising concerns about his ability to lead the side effectively.

The team’s poor performance in the previous season, where they finished in 10th place, had set high expectations for a strong comeback. However, early signs have not been encouraging. The bowling unit has struggled to take crucial wickets, and the opening pair of Gaikwad and Sanju Samson has failed to produce consistent runs. This lack of form has only added to the growing pressure on the captain.

Sanju Samson’s Arrival and Its Impact

Sanju Samson’s move to CSK through a trade deal was highly anticipated. The wicketkeeper-batter was seen as a potential long-term successor to MS Dhoni, who is nearing the end of his career. However, Samson has not lived up to these expectations so far. Despite his stellar performance in the T20 World Cup, where he delivered match-winning performances in every knockout match for India, his form has not translated into success for CSK.

This situation has raised questions about the partnership between Gaikwad and Samson. Cricket analysts like Michael Vaughan and Simon Doull have pointed out that the arrival of Samson could be adding to the pressure on Gaikwad. Vaughan highlighted the dynamics of the situation, suggesting that Samson’s presence might subtly increase the pressure on the captain, even though the team remains confident in his leadership.

“Do you think the captain, Gaikwad, feels under pressure because of Samson?” Vaughan asked Doull.

“Definitely,” the former New Zealand pacer responded.

“So that introduces a whole new dynamic. You have one of the league’s youngest captains, Gaikwad, and you think, ‘We back you, you’re the captain.’ But then the team signs Sanju, a capable captain and wicketkeeper, and reminds you that they had a keeper-captain who led successfully for years. Yet you’re still expected to carry on leading without letting it affect you,” Vaughan said.

Expectations and Challenges for Sanju Samson

Doull also emphasized the increased pressure on Samson following his high-profile transfer to CSK. He noted the expectations tied to the trade, which involved losing two quality players for one. This has placed immense pressure on Samson to perform well in familiar conditions.

“Tough situation for him, and it’s the kind of challenge you face when you’re not desperate but want to perform for a team and put on a show,” Doull said. “He’s from the South, Kerala, and he wants to shine in familiar conditions. The trade was a big one, losing two quality players for one, so the expectations and pressure are huge. But he just needs to remember how well he was playing in the last few T20 World Cup games.”

Looking Ahead

As the IPL 2026 season progresses, the pressure on both Gaikwad and Samson will continue to mount. For Gaikwad, the challenge is to prove that he can lead the team effectively despite the struggles. For Samson, the task is to adapt quickly and deliver the performances that were expected when he joined CSK.

The coming matches will be crucial for both players, as they will need to rise to the occasion and help the team turn their fortunes around. With the right mindset and support from the team, there is still hope that CSK can make a strong comeback in this season.
