Rebel Wilson’s Film “The Deb” Faces Challenges in Theatrical Release
Rebel Wilson’s latest film, The Deb, has struggled to find its audience in cinemas, leading to a decision to focus on streaming services. The film had a disappointing opening weekend, earning just $116,000 across 188 screens in Australia. This result was in line with expectations, as the movie faced significant challenges due to ongoing lawsuits in both Australia and the United States, which limited its promotional efforts.
According to box office data from Numero, The Deb averaged a low $618 per screen, highlighting the film’s poor performance. Despite this, some critics praised the film for its energetic and heartfelt approach. Sandra Hall, writing for this masthead, described the film as having a “joyous mood” and noted that it was “a wonderful mix of the raucous and the heartfelt and charges along at an exhilarating pace.” In The Australian, Nikki Gemmell called The Deb “hilarious: filthy, fun, but most of all moving.”
Adaptation of a Stage Musical
The Deb is adapted by Hannah Reilly from her 2022 stage musical. The story follows a city private school student, Charlotte MacInnes, who is sent to stay with her country cousin, Natalie Abbott, before a debutante ball. The film’s release was delayed earlier in the year, and it finally opened in cinemas just before MacInnes’ defamation action against Wilson begins in the Federal Court next Monday. The film’s producers have also filed defamation lawsuits against Wilson, who has responded with a countersuit. Wilson not only directs the film but also stars in it.
Industry Reactions
Palace Cinemas chief executive Benjamin Zeccola expressed his disappointment for the filmmakers, stating, “So many people work on a film, and it’s a tragedy. I hope everyone can pick themselves up and move on.” He noted that the poor box office results meant The Deb would lose many of its sessions from Thursday. However, he remained optimistic about the film’s future, saying, “Having a theatrical release and being reviewed by the major papers over the weekend will help it going into the next stage of its life in home viewing.”
Peter Howard, proprietor of Howard Cinemas in Taree and Tuncurry in regional NSW, called the opening figures “quite disastrous” for a film aimed at a broad audience. He described the public’s reaction to the legal issues surrounding the film as “public shenanigans,” which he believes sabotaged the release. “It was my lowest ranked film,” Howard said. “I’m finishing the film on Wednesday.”
While he personally enjoyed The Deb, Howard felt the film needed a more judicious edit and could not overcome the legal dramas that began even before the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024.
Looking Ahead
Despite the challenges, The Deb may still find its audience through streaming platforms. As the film moves into its next phase, it will rely on word-of-mouth and reviews to attract viewers.
