New Presenters Bring Fresh Energy to MasterChef

Grace Dent, a restaurant critic from Carlisle, and Anna Haugh, a chef from Dublin, have taken over the presenting duties for MasterChef on BBC1. Their dynamic brings a sense of girl-power energy along with a fresh dash of wit and panache. However, the question remains: is this enough to revitalize a show that has become somewhat tired?

Now in its 22nd series, MasterChef is still the biggest cooking show on television. However, it has been tarnished by the behavior of its previous hosts. Last year, the BBC announced it would not renew the contracts of Gregg Wallace and John Torode following multiple complaints of sexual harassment and the use of an offensive racial term.

On the promotional trail, Grace and Anna have emphasized their focus on the future rather than the past. While this is understandable, it’s clear that the legacy of the previous presenters still lingers.

A Familiar Setting with New Flavors

Back in the MasterChef kitchen, contestants are once again using tweezers to plate up dishes, adding edible flowers as garnishes, and creating centrepiece roses made of beetroot. The studio voiceovers continue to narrate the usual tales of doomed dishes and dashed dreams.

One contestant, Rosdip, created masala-chai flavoured American pancakes with miso-glazed bacon, whipped avocado, pistachio praline, and a pistachio custard. Anna noted, “These flavours are fighting in my mouth,” in a polite understatement.

Another contestant, Maria, made a baked doughnut topped with caramelised pineapple spiced with scotch-bonnet chilli, tamarind, and lime, served on ginger custard with a pistachio crumb. The challenge was evident, as Anna questioned the wisdom of baking instead of frying. “It feels a bit heavy,” she sighed.

Michael, another contestant, was thrilled with his black-pudding foam, which he piped into streaks on his plate. Grace observed that it looked like her mascara after a night out.

Creative Dishes with Mixed Results

Other contestants attempted unique combinations, such as a passion-fruit coulis to accompany baked salmon, alongside pureed parsnips. Scallops and radishes were sprinkled with cinnamon for no reason, and crab bonbons were judged as under-seasoned and undercooked.

Sabina, a try-hard contestant, made a ‘harmony salad’ of black beans, crispy chicken skin, falafel, quail eggs, and garlic mushrooms. She aimed to create world peace within a dish, but the results were mixed.

Still, the mixed-ability contestants risk humiliation in front of millions to live the dream. One hopeful didn’t eat an egg until he was 25. Another’s signature dish was pork served seven different ways, wrapped in Parma ham inside a culinary porcine enigma.

Black Pudding Foam Man remained undaunted by criticism, stating, “This experience has enhanced my willingness to take what I like and make it better.”

New Presenters Bring Promise

The success of the new series will depend on the appeal of Grace Dent and Anna Haugh. Unlike the previous hosts, they bring genuine good cheer and much-needed fem-verve to the proceedings.

Grace Dent, with her demi-beehive, glam dresses, and oyster-sized earrings, seems inspired by Fanny Cradock, with a touch of Cruella and camp. Her commanding air and unexpected turn of phrase add a unique flair to the show.

In one episode, she asked, “Can you fritter a lentil?” and later pondered, “Is there any way I can eat this and not look like a wild animal?” Her enthusiasm for the pancake taco was evident, though the outcome was less impressive.

Anna Haugh has moments of gurning concern, such as when she exclaimed, “I do not want to see him boiling the bejaysus out of that fish.” However, the chemistry between the two presenters is still developing.

While the new Batwoman and Robinette superheroines show promise, they need more time to fully bake in the oven. For now, they represent a significant improvement over the previous hosts.
