Watch: Marcus Stoinis Smashes One of the Tournament’s Flattest Sixes

A High-Scoring Victory for Punjab Kings

The Punjab Kings delivered a stunning performance against the Lucknow Super Giants at Mullanpur on April 19. This was the first time in the 2026 IPL that Punjab had to defend a score after LSG opted to bat first. The match saw a remarkable display of batting from the Punjab side, with Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly leading the charge.

Arya and Connolly formed a formidable partnership, which proved crucial for the team’s success. Their efforts were highlighted by a blistering 185-run second-wicket stand, with Arya scoring 93 off 37 balls and Connolly contributing 87 off 46. Both players showcased exceptional strike rates, with Arya hitting nine sixes and Connolly seven. The duo’s aggressive approach allowed Punjab to reach 63/1 in the powerplay and cross the 200-run mark in just 16.3 overs.

However, the innings wasn’t without its challenges. After the departure of Arya and Connolly, Punjab lost their in-form captain Shreyas Iyer. Nehal Wadhera continued to struggle with his form, but Marcus Stoinis provided a vital contribution. In the second ball of Avesh Khan’s third over, Stoinis hit a six that left everyone in awe.

Avesh delivered a back-of-length ball just outside off-stumps. Stoinis stood upright and pulled the ball hard through the long on. The commentators even speculated that the ball might not have cleared 20 meters from the ground while in the air.

A Strong Batting Display

Punjab’s innings concluded with a total of 254/7, thanks to contributions from Marcus Stoinis (29 off 16) and Shashank Singh (17 off 6). The team maintained a high run rate of 12.70 throughout the innings. Among the LSG bowlers, Prince Yadav was the standout performer with figures of 2/25, while Manimaran Siddharth took 2/35.

In response, Lucknow Super Giants managed to post a total of 200/5 in 20 overs. Despite a strong start of 61/1 in the powerplay, they fell short of the target. Rishabh Pant top-scored with 43 off 23, while Mitchell Marsh (40), Aiden Markram (42), and Ayush Badoni (35) kept the chase alive. However, the required run rate increased, and LSG’s run rate of 10.00 was well below the target pace.

Key Performances from the Bowling Attack

For Punjab, Marco Jansen (2/37) and Vijaykumar Vyshak (1/30) controlled the middle overs, while Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal each took a wicket. The Punjab bowling attack played a crucial role in restricting the LSG run rate and ensuring a comprehensive win.

PBKS dominated both phases of the innings, registering one of the highest totals of the season. The victory was a testament to their strong batting performance and disciplined bowling. With this win, Punjab solidified their position in the tournament and set the stage for more exciting matches ahead.
