PERRY, Mich. – On Thursday, state education leaders had the opportunity to witness firsthand how a mid-Michigan school district is making a difference in student learning and engagement.
The Michigan Department of Education visited Perry Public Schools to explore the various hands-on learning opportunities and extracurricular activities that the district has developed for its students. Despite being a smaller rural district, Perry is focused on providing students with diverse ways to learn, compete, and prepare for their future after graduation.
“We have a mountain biking program for our upper elementary students, a thriving ag science program, e-sports, robotics,” said Lori Haven, superintendent of Perry Public Schools. “We also have thriving drama and vocal and instrumental music programs, and a lot of great academic offerings.”
School leaders are proud to showcase what can be achieved when a district prioritizes the student experience over just meeting basic requirements. They believe that by focusing on a well-rounded education, students are better equipped to succeed in the real world.
Some of the key programs and initiatives that Perry Public Schools offers include:
- Mountain Biking Program: Designed for upper elementary students, this program combines physical activity with outdoor education, teaching students about nature, safety, and teamwork.
- Agricultural Science Program: This program provides students with hands-on experience in agriculture, covering topics such as animal care, plant biology, and sustainable farming practices.
- E-Sports and Robotics: These competitive programs allow students to develop technical skills, strategic thinking, and collaboration abilities through gaming and engineering challenges.
- Drama and Music Programs: The district’s performing arts programs offer students the chance to participate in theater productions, vocal performances, and instrumental ensembles, fostering creativity and self-expression.
- Academic Offerings: In addition to these extracurricular activities, Perry Public Schools continues to maintain strong academic standards, ensuring students receive a comprehensive education.
By offering these unique programs, Perry Public Schools is setting an example for other districts looking to enhance student engagement and provide more meaningful learning experiences.
