Pistons vs. Magic: Orlando Wins Game 1

The Playoff Struggle Continues for the Detroit Pistons

The playoffs are here, but the Detroit Pistons are still searching for their first home playoff win since 2008. In a tough matchup against the Orlando Magic, the Pistons faced another setback, extending their losing streak in home playoff games to 11 consecutive contests.

From the start, the Orlando Magic came out strong with a 13-5 run, led by Jalen Suggs who contributed eight points. They extended their lead to 18-5 before Cade Cunningham hit a three-pointer to slow the momentum. A key play came when Isaiah Stewart blocked Paolo Banchero at the rim, followed by a Cunningham dunk that brought the score to 27-20. However, the Magic closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run, taking a 35-27 lead into the second quarter.

Detroit’s head coach, JB Bickerstaff, maintained his regular season rotation, but early foul trouble for Duncan Robinson forced more guard minutes on the floor. Despite several opportunities to take the lead in the second quarter, the Pistons struggled to convert key shots. Ausar Thompson showcased his defensive prowess throughout the quarter, using his verticality and quickness to force turnovers and secure offensive rebounds.

Orlando entered halftime with a 55-51 lead. The Pistons’ offense needed more contributions beyond Cade Cunningham’s 14 points, but the Magic dominated the paint, limiting Jalen Duren to just three field goal attempts. Duncan Robinson and Tobias Harris combined to shoot 3-for-12 from the field, highlighting the team’s struggles offensively.

In the third quarter, the Magic went on another run, starting with an 8-1 surge that forced a timeout from Bickerstaff. The Pistons responded with eight straight points after Tobias Harris hit a crucial corner three. However, Orlando quickly countered with a 12-3 run, forcing another timeout as they took a 79-68 lead with four minutes remaining. Detroit continued to struggle generating quality shots, and the Magic held a seven-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer from Duncan Robinson briefly energized the crowd, cutting the deficit to 85-81. But Jalen Suggs answered with his own three to extend the Magic’s lead. Orlando started the fourth quarter strong, going 6-for-6 from the field, including a Franz Wagner floater that forced a timeout and gave the Magic an eight-point lead. Despite difficult shots, the Magic managed to make them, maintaining their dominance throughout the game.

Cunningham scored a midrange jumper to reach 30 points, but the Magic held a 101-92 lead with six minutes left. He was the only consistent offensive threat for the Pistons, creating shots against a tough Orlando defense. The Magic, on the other hand, made difficult shots all game long, securing a 112-101 victory.

This loss marked another chapter in the Pistons’ playoff struggles. Every starter for the Magic scored at least 16 points, and they outscored Detroit 54-34 in the paint. The Magic essentially played a better version of the Pistons’ style of play, leaving little room for the home team to compete.

Despite the loss, Cade Cunningham showed flashes of future stardom, finishing with 39 points, five rebounds, and four assists. However, the rest of the team failed to step up. Tobias Harris added 17 points but shot poorly, going 5-for-15 from the field and 1-for-7 from beyond the arc. Daniss Jenkins and Harris combined to miss 11 three-pointers, and no other Piston reached double digits in scoring. Javonte Green and Caris LeVert each played less than five minutes, further highlighting the team’s lack of depth.

Jalen Duren was limited by the Magic’s defense, finishing with eight points and seven rebounds but only four shot attempts. As the Pistons look ahead to Game 2, Coach Bickerstaff will need to find ways to get Duren more involved on offense. Most importantly, he must ensure that the Magic don’t continue to outplay the Pistons in the same way they did tonight.

With the series now split, the Pistons will have to respond and play like the #1 seed they are. Go Stones.
