Thunder’s Back-to-Back Dominant Game 1 Win Joins Elite Company with Showtime Lakers

Oklahoma City Thunder Dominates in Playoff Opener

The Oklahoma City Thunder have been a force to be reckoned with this season, securing the NBA’s best record and setting the stage for a strong playoff run. In their first-round matchup against the Phoenix Suns, the Thunder showcased their dominance right from the start, beginning their quest for a second consecutive NBA championship.

In Game 1 of the series, the Thunder quickly took control of the game, flipping a switch into playoff mode. The Suns were able to keep things close in the early minutes, with the score tied at 12-12. However, the Thunder closed out the first quarter on a 23-8 run, entering the second quarter with a commanding 35-20 lead. From there, the Thunder continued their impressive performance, ultimately securing an 119-84 victory over the Suns.

While this win wasn’t as dominant as the Thunder’s playoff opener last season—a 131-80 win over the Memphis Grizzlies—it still places them in elite company. According to ESPN, the Thunder became the second team in NBA history to post a 30-plus-point win in consecutive playoff openers. The other team to achieve this feat was the 1986-87 Showtime Los Angeles Lakers.

A Legacy of Dominance

The 1985-86 Lakers started their playoffs with a 135-88 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Although they eventually lost to the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference finals, the following season saw them return with a 128-95 win over the Denver Nuggets. That year, they went on to defeat the Boston Celtics in the Finals, claiming their fourth NBA championship of the Showtime era. They would go on to win another title the next season, this time defeating the Detroit Pistons in the Finals.

This kind of success is reminiscent of what the Thunder accomplished last season when they won their first NBA championship since moving to Oklahoma City. Their performance in Game 1 of this series showed similar signs of dominance, with a strong defensive effort that limited the Suns to just 35% shooting from the field. The Thunder forced 17 turnovers and blocked seven shots, which led to multiple easy baskets on the other end.

Key Performances

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled from the field, making only 5 of 18 shots, but he made up for it at the free-throw line, where he shot 15 of 17. He led the Thunder with 25 points and seven assists. He was one of three players, along with Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, who recorded two blocks each.

Jalen Williams, who had a difficult regular season due to injuries, returned to form with a standout performance. He scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists, blocked one shot, and stole the ball once. His efficient shooting (9 of 15 from the field, 2 of 5 from three) was a key factor in the Thunder’s success.

A Strong Start to the Playoffs

The Thunder’s performance in Game 1 of the series was reminiscent of how they started last postseason, when they won the championship. So far, everything seems to be going smoothly for Oklahoma City as they aim for a second straight title.
