Magic vs Pistons Game 1 Shocking NBA Playoffs Highlights

The Detroit Pistons are facing a tough challenge as they look to secure their first playoff victory at Little Caesars Arena. Despite the efforts of star player Cade Cunningham, who put up an impressive 39 points, the team struggled to find consistent support from his teammates. As a result, the Orlando Magic emerged victorious with a 112-101 win in Game 1 of the 2026 Eastern Conference playoffs at the arena in Detroit.

This loss marks a setback for the Pistons, who entered the series as the top seed. The team is now down 1-0 in the best-of-seven matchup and will need to regroup quickly for Game 2. The next game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. ET, also at Little Caesars Arena. After that, the series will move to Orlando for two games, giving the Magic a chance to take control of the series.

A Historic Challenge

Since 2008, the Pistons have not managed to secure a home playoff win, making this series particularly significant for the franchise. The pressure is on the team to perform well in front of their home crowd and to avoid falling further behind in the series. With the stakes high, the Pistons will need to make adjustments and find a way to complement Cunningham’s performance with contributions from other players.

Key Takeaways from Game 1

  • Cade Cunningham’s Performance: Cunningham was the standout player for the Pistons, scoring 39 points. His ability to carry the team offensively was evident, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
  • Team Support: The lack of support from other players was a major issue. The Pistons struggled to maintain consistency on both ends of the court, which allowed the Magic to gain momentum.
  • Orlando’s Strategy: The Magic executed their game plan effectively, focusing on defense and limiting the Pistons’ opportunities. Their balanced approach helped them come away with the victory.

Looking Ahead

With Game 2 just days away, the Pistons must focus on improving their execution and teamwork. They will need to address the weaknesses exposed in Game 1 and come up with a strategy that can counter the Magic’s strengths. Fans will be hoping for a strong response from the team, especially given the historical significance of this series.

The upcoming games will be crucial for the Pistons as they aim to turn the tide in their favor. The team has the talent and the motivation to make a statement, but they will need to perform at their best to achieve their goal.

The Pistons did not lead at any point through the game, with the Magic responding to every Detroit comeback. Five Orlando players finished with double-digit point totals, while Cunningham and forward Tobias Harris (17 points) were the only Pistons to provide any significant offensive production.

The Pistons spent most of the regular season with the best record in the East, earning their first No. 1 seed since the 2006-07 season. Meanwhile, the Magic advanced through the NBA Play-In Tournament, beating the Charlotte Hornets on Friday to grab the 8-seed.

Here’s how it all went down.

Magic take Game 1

FINAL: Magic 112, Pistons 101.

Cunningham scored a game-high 39 points, but the Pistons fell to the Orlando Magic in Game 1.

Game 2 will take place on Wednesday, April 22, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The Pistons are still looking for their first-ever playoff win at Little Caesars Arena.

Magic lead late

4Q, 3:45: Magic 103, Pistons 95

Cade Cunningham scored his 30th point of the night on a pullup midrange jumper, but Magic guard Franz Wagner responded with a strong dunk on the other end to maintain an 8-point Orlando lead. He is one of five Orlando players in double figures, while the Pistons only have two players with at least 10 (Cunningham and Tobias Harris).

Cunningham’s two made free throws after a shooting foul brought the Pistons to within four points midway through the quarter, but Magic guard Tristan da Silva hit an open 3-pointer immediately after and Wendell Carter Jr. made a layup to extend Orlando’s lead to nine points.

The Magic have had responses for every Detroit run, and the Pistons are running out of time to mount a comeback.

Both offenses hot to start the fourth quarter

4Q, 8:15: Magic 94, Pistons 86.

Two Tobias Harris buckets (with a Duncan Robins 3-pointer in between) helped the Pistons cut the lead to five points. A Cade Cunningham 3-pointer on the next possession cut Orlando’s lead to three points, but back-to-back buckets from the Magic brought the lead back up to eight points.

The Magic are 6-for-6 form the floor to start the fourth quarter, responding to every Pistons make.

Magic up after three quarters

End 3Q: Magic 81, Pistons 74.

Cade Cunningham’s layup gave the Pistons star his team-high 20th and 21st points of the evening and cut Orlando’s lead to nine points. A step-back, midrange jumper a few possessions later then cut the Magic lead to seven, as the All-Star has become the team’s most reliable scorer.

Detroit’s other All-Star Jalen Duren, however, hasn’t been much of a factor offensively. He is 3-for-4 from the field with just six points, and the Pistons could use some help form a non-Cunningham scorer if they want to come back in the fourth.

Magic extending lead in third quarter

3Q, 3:43: Magic 79, Pistons 68.

Orlando has been hot offensively so far in the third quarter, outscoring Detroit by five points and at one point going on a 12-3 run. Star Paolo Banchero has been especially effective, shooting 8-for-12 from the field and putting up 23 points.

Detroit’s offense, meanwhile, has struggled to keep up after putting up a 10-0 run in the quarter, as the Magic now open up a double-digit lead.

Magic lead by four at halftime

HALFTIME: Magic 55, Pistons 51.

With the Pistons down by three points, a Kevin Huerter steal led to a Cade Cunningham layup, bringing Detroit’s deficit to one point. Cunningham then missed a 3-pointer on the next possession, but Magic guard Franz Wagner did not, giving Orlando a 55-51 lead.

Detroit did well in bringing this to a two-possession game, with the Pistons allowing only 20 Orlando points in the second quarter while forcing numerous turnovers and missed shots. However, Detroit’s offense is still searching for consistency, scoring only 24 points in the second quarter.

Pistons cut deficit to 2 points

2Q, 3:34: Magic 49, Pistons 47.

After giving up 35 points in the first quarter, Detroit’s defense clamped down early in the second as the offense clawed back. Two made free throws from guard Javonte Green brought the Pistons to within two points, but a Cade Cunningham steal didn’t lead to the game-tying points after Magic guard Jalen Suggs stole the ball back from Cunningham in transition.

An Ausar Thompson steal led to a Thompson rebound and bucket (after Kevin Huerter’s miss) to once again bring the Pistons to within two points.

Magic maintaining momentum

2Q, 6:16: Magic 47, Pistons 40.

Pistons forward Tobias Harris scored the first points for the Pistons in the second quarter, making two free throws and then following with a transition dunk to bring Detroit within five points. Harris and point guard Cade Cunningham lead the Pistons with nine points each.

A Ron Holland running dunk cut Orlando’s lead to four points, but Orlando forward Wendell Carter Jr. followed with a 3-pointer. The Magic had missed their previous nine 3-pointers before that make.

Pistons center Jalen Duren scored his first two points of the game on a layup four minutes into the second quarter, but the Magic immediately responded with a dunk from Anthony Black off an inbounds pass. Duren’s thunderous dunk midway through the quarter brought the Pistons to within five, but once again, the Magic responded with a Paolo Banchero midrange jumper. Orlando has the momentum in the second quarter.

Magic up after first quarter

End 1Q: Magic 35, Pistons 27.

A Tobias Harris layup pulled the Pistons to within three points as Detroit’s defense locked down on Orlando’s shooting as the first quarter wound down. Pistons guard Daniss Jenkins then hit a 3-pointer, his first points of the game, to bring the Pistons to within two points during a 12-2 Detroit run.

The Pistons couldn’t quite tie the game, however, despite a malfunction on the NBC score bug at one ponit showing a tie. Orlando is up by eight points after one quarter.

Pistons clawing back

1Q, 3:06: Magic 27, Pistons 20.

A Franz Wagner layup and free throw extended Orlando’s 10-0 run, which Pistons star Cade Cunningham ended with a 3-pointer, his first points of the game.

Orlando extended its lead to as much as 13 points, while a Kevin Huerter 3-pointer brought the Pistons to within nine points. The Magic have gone a little colder from the 3-point line, but the Pistons offense hasn’t yet found its rhythm.

Magic guard Jalen Suggs leads all scorers with 11 points, followed by Magic forward Paolo Banchero with nine. Cunningham leads the Pistons with seven points so far. His fastbreak dunk was started by a thunderous block by Pistons center Isaiah Stewart on Banchero’s dunk attempt.

Magic up early

1Q, 8:27: Magic 13, Pistons 5.

Orlando guard Jalen Suggs knocked down a 3-pointer for the first points of the game, followed by a Duncan Robinson 3-pointer that tied the game.

Orlando shot well early, making five of its first eight baskets, including three 3-pointers. Magic guard Jalen Suggs has eight points so far, including a fastbreak dunk that led to a Detroit timeout.

No surprises with the Pistons’ starting five.

  • PG Cade Cunningham.
  • SG Duncan Robinson.
  • SF Ausar Thompson.

Magic starting five

Magic guard Desmond Bane is in Orlando’s starting five for tonight’s Game 1 against the Pistons.

Pistons injury update

There isn’t much to say on the Pistons’ injury front, since the teams lists no players on tonight’s injury report.

When asked about his team’s health ahead of the game, Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said, “We’re at our best when we’re full.”

Desmond Bane injury update

Per the Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede, Magic guard Desmond Bane is available to play tonight. He had previously been listed as probable with an illness.

Magic forward Jonathan Isaac, meanwhile, has been downgraded from questionable to out with a left knee sprain.

Magic haven’t won road playoff game since 2019

The Pistons haven’t won a home playoff game in a while, but the Orlando Magic haven’t been so good on the road, either.

Orlando has lost 11 straight road playoff games (excluding the 2020 playoffs, when every NBA playoff game was played in Orlando) dating back to a 104-101 first-round Game 1 win over the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors won the next four games to take the series en route to their first NBA title.

Pistons looking to avoid upset

The NBA rarely sees 8-seeds beat 1-seeds in the playoffs, but it’s not unprecedented.

The only two teams to have won at least 60 games and lost their first-round series are the 2007 Dallas Mavericks (who lost to the “We Believe” Golden State Warriors) and the 2011 San Antonio Spurs (who lost to the Memphis Grizzlies). The Pistons are looking not to become the third, though the majority of NBA experts believe they will cruise through the series.

Pistons last playoff series win was against Magic

The Pistons haven’t won a playoff series since 2008, when they beat the Magic in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals before losing to the Boston Celtics in six games in the conference finals.

Detroit made it back to the playoffs the next season but lost in the first round to the 1-seed Cleveland Cavaliers. Meanwhile, the Magic won the East in 2009 but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. The Magic also have a long series-win drought, last winning a playoff series in 2010.

Pistons have 10-game home playoff losing streak

The Pistons are looking to break a long losing streak tonight, having lost their last 10 home playoff games (an NBA record).

It has been 6,537 days since Detroit’s last home playoff win, which came in a 94-75 win over the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals on May 26, 2008. The Celtics won that series in six games, and it was the last time the Pistons played in a playoff series beyond the first round.

Pistons vs Magic prediction for playoff series

Omari Sankofa II, Detroit Free Press: The Magic are more than just Banchero and Wagner – Desmond Bane delivered an efficient season averaging more than 20 points and is capable of swinging a playoff game with a big performance. But the Pistons are deeper and have simply been better this season, on both ends. It shouldn’t be a long series. The pick: Pistons in 5.
