Newly acquired Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence broke his silence after being traded to the team in a major deal with the New York Giants on Saturday (April 18). In an interview with Bengals radio voice Dan Hoard on his YouTube channel, Lawrence expressed his gratitude and excitement about joining the organization.
“They wanted me here and they appreciated the work that I’ve put in over the last seven seasons,” Lawrence said. “I appreciate that and I’m going to do everything I can to show them that they didn’t waste [a top 10 pick]. I’m excited. I’ve got a fire in me that I’ve never had before, so I’m excited. I’m excited to be a Bengal.”
“God got me through it, and right now, I’m ready to let my light shine and go win some games,” he added.
The trade between the Giants and Bengals involved Lawrence being sent to Cincinnati in exchange for the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The former All-Pro nose tackle then agreed to a one-year, $28 million extension with the Bengals. The Giants already hold the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which is set to begin on Thursday (April 23) night.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lawrence, who signed a $90 million extension in 2023, had requested a trade after “attempting to negotiate a new contract reflecting his value to the Giants over the last three years, but there has not been any progress.”
“Dexter Lawrence has two years remaining on his deal and is currently scheduled to make $20 million this upcoming season. Initially there had been optimism that with changes in the organization, discussions could move forward. But now that they haven’t, new Giants head coach John Harbaugh will open his team’s off-season program Tuesday without one of his best players,” Schefter wrote.
Harbaugh had previously discussed Lawrence’s importance to the Giants’ success in February.
“How important is he? Really important,” Harbaugh said via ESPN. “He’s super, super important. He’s a cornerstone football player — not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone. He’s right in the middle. He’s a very big stone, and he’s a very active, athletic one.”
Lawrence was selected by the Giants at No. 17 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Clemson standout is a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time second-team All-Pro, but is coming off a season in which he recorded career lows for tackles (31), sacks (0.5) and QB hits (8) in 2025.

- Trade Details: The Giants received the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft in exchange for Lawrence.

Why the Trade Happened
Dexter Lawrence had been seeking a new contract with the Giants, as he felt his performance over the past three years did not reflect the value he brings to the team. Despite initial optimism following organizational changes, no progress was made on a new deal. This led to Lawrence requesting a trade, which the Giants eventually facilitated.
Impact on the Giants
With Lawrence’s departure, the Giants are losing one of their most critical players. Head coach John Harbaugh had previously emphasized how vital Lawrence is to the team’s defensive strategy. His absence will likely have a significant impact on the Giants’ plans moving forward, especially as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft and the upcoming season.
What’s Next for the Bengals?
For the Bengals, acquiring Lawrence adds a proven defensive presence to their roster. With a strong defensive line already in place, Lawrence’s experience and leadership could help elevate the team’s performance. His recent contract extension also shows the Bengals’ commitment to keeping him in Cincinnati for the foreseeable future.
Conclusion
The trade marks a significant shift for both teams. For the Giants, it’s a difficult decision to part ways with a key player, while for the Bengals, it’s an opportunity to strengthen their defense. As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, both teams will look to capitalize on their respective moves and build toward a successful season.
