Detroit Tigers Triumph Over Boston Red Sox in Rainy Fenway Park Showdown
In a game marked by persistent rain and challenging conditions, the Detroit Tigers emerged victorious with a 6-2 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on a cold Sunday afternoon. The Tigers’ offensive firepower proved too much for the Red Sox, especially as they managed to knock out ace pitcher Garrett Crochet early in the contest.
The Tigers (12-10) extended their winning streak to two games after dropping the first match of the series. They will conclude the four-game set against the Red Sox (8-13) on Monday morning. The game was delayed by three hours due to unfavorable weather forecasts, but even with the postponement, steady rain continued throughout the event.
One day after Tarik Skubal led the Tigers to a win, the team faced off against one of his key rivals for the Cy Young Award: Garrett Crochet, the 2025 runner-up. Crochet came into the game looking to bounce back from a disastrous start against Minnesota, where he allowed 11 runs in just 1 2/3 innings. Although Saturday’s performance wasn’t as damaging, the Tigers ensured that another setback would be added to his Cy Young résumé.
The turning point of the game came in the fifth inning when the Tigers erupted for four runs with two outs. Jahmai Jones started the rally with a solo home run, followed by a walk from Gleyber Torres and a single from Matt Vierling. Dillon Dingler then delivered a three-run homer to center field, sealing the lead for the Tigers.
Dingler finished the game with a stellar 4-for-5 performance, raising his batting average to .302 with a .983 OPS and five home runs through 73 plate appearances in 2026. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised the team’s resilience in the adverse conditions, noting that “our guys did a good job battling through the conditions, obviously against a really good pitcher.”
Framber Valdez, the Tigers’ starting pitcher, gave up a solo home run to Willson Contreras in the first inning but otherwise dominated the game, pitching six strong innings. He struck out seven batters and handed a four-run lead to the bullpen. Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, while the Red Sox scored a run in the ninth inning off Connor Seabold when Caleb Durbin hit a two-out double off the Green Monster in left.
Upcoming Matchup
The Tigers will wrap up their four-game series against the Red Sox on Monday at 11:10 a.m. The game time is special due to Patriots’ Day and the Boston Marathon. Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty (0-1, 4.05 ERA) will face Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray (2-1, 4.43).
Flaherty has allowed just two runs over his last two starts (11 2/3 innings). His previous outing at Fenway Park was one of his best of 2024, where he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings, striking out nine and allowing only one walk and one hit in the Tigers’ 5-0 win on May 30, 2024.
Gray, who was traded to the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals last November, had three solid starts with his new team before a rough outing on April 14 at Minnesota. He allowed five runs on nine hits, including two home runs, and struck out just one batter in four innings.
