Artists and community leaders in Everett were honored on Thursday during the 32nd annual Wendt and Mayor’s Arts Awards at the Everett Performing Arts Center. The event celebrated individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts in the city. Among those recognized was Herald photographer Olivia Vanni, who was featured in a photograph above.
Judy Tuohy, a city council member and former executive director of the Schack Art Center for over three decades, received the Richard and Nancy Wendt Award of Excellence. This prestigious award is given to an individual who has shown lifelong support for the arts. Tuohy’s dedication to the arts has left a lasting impact on the community, and her work has helped shape the cultural landscape of Everett.
In addition to the Wendt Award, four individuals and organizations were honored with the Mayor’s Arts Awards. These awards are presented to people or groups that have made the city a better place through their creative vision and contributions.
Olivia Vanni was one of the recipients, recognizing her work as a photographer and her commitment to capturing the essence of the local art scene. Another recipient was Eric Jimenez, the founder of Events That Benefit, a nonprofit organization that celebrates Latino heritage through various events and initiatives. Jimenez’s efforts have brought attention to the rich cultural traditions of the Latino community in Everett.
Tamara Coffman, a long-time art educator at Everett Public Schools, was also honored for her dedication to teaching and inspiring students. Her work has helped nurture the artistic talents of many young people in the area. Additionally, The Dance School, an Everett-based dance education program, was recognized for its role in promoting dance as an essential form of expression and creativity.
The ceremony highlighted the importance of the arts in shaping the identity of the city and fostering a sense of community. It also served as a reminder of the ongoing need to support and invest in the arts, especially in times when funding and resources may be limited.
