Jon Rahm’s Dominant Win at LIV Golf Event in Mexico City
Jon Rahm delivered a stunning performance at the LIV Golf event in Mexico City, securing a six-stroke victory with a final round of 64. The win came despite ongoing reports of internal turmoil within the tour, which has been facing challenges due to potential changes in funding from Saudi Arabia.
Rahm bounced back from a less-than-ideal showing at the Masters, building on his two-shot lead with an impressive start to the final day. He recorded three birdies and an eagle in his first five holes, making the outcome of the individual competition almost certain.
“I’m a little bit in disbelief… If you were to tell me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’ll be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not believe you, because of how bad I played,” Rahm said after the event.
Rahm’s team, Legion XIII, also claimed victory in the team event, finishing with a comfortable margin. “I’m fortunate to have these teammates. They’re unbelievable, and hopefully only better to come,” Rahm added.
Turmoil Behind the Scenes
Earlier in the week, there were reports suggesting that the LIV Golf tour might be on the verge of collapse, with concerns about the withdrawal of Saudi Arabian financing. Some analysts even speculated that the Mexico City event might not take place. However, LIV CEO Scott O’Neil reassured staff that the current season would continue “full throttle.”
Despite the uncertainty, the event proceeded as usual at the Club de Golf Chapultepec. Rahm took full advantage of the course conditions, particularly the short early par-fours and the high altitude. He drove to within a yard of the pin at the 390-yard third hole, resulting in a tap-in eagle.
Two more birdies extended Rahm’s lead, and although David Puig managed to close the gap slightly with an eagle at the par-five seventh, he faltered down the stretch, ending the tournament at 15-under par. Rahm, on the other hand, completed a bogey-free round to finish the tournament at 21-under par.
This was Rahm’s second win of the season on the LIV tour, following a victory in Hong Kong earlier this month.
Spanish Podium and Other Highlights
The podium was dominated by Spanish players, with Josele Ballester finishing third at 14-under par. Tyrrell Hatton, who started the day in second place, had a challenging final round. He carded a double bogey on the second hole and added four more bogeys, finishing with a disappointing 72.
Despite his struggles, Hatton and Rahm’s team, Legion XIII, still won the team event by nine strokes. Their success was bolstered by teammate Tom McKibbin, who tied for fifth in the individual competition.
Conclusion
Rahm’s performance in Mexico City not only solidified his position as one of the top golfers on the LIV tour but also showcased his ability to thrive under pressure. As the tour continues to navigate its challenges, Rahm’s dominance serves as a reminder of the high level of competition that fans can expect moving forward.
