Allegations of a New Plot Against Former Governor
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has recently raised concerns about a new plot that seeks to implicate him in criminal activities. He expressed fears about coordinated efforts aimed at damaging his reputation and hindering his release on bail. The former governor is scheduled to appear before the Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday, April 21, for a decision on his bail application.
The trial judge, Justice Darius Khobo, set this date after considering arguments from both sides. However, El-Rufai has warned of what he calls “malicious orchestrations” designed to keep him in detention. His Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, released a statement detailing these concerns.
El-Rufai recalled an incident on February 12, 2026, when he claimed there were plans to arrest him upon his arrival at the Abuja Airport from Cairo. This event marked the start of what he described as a troubling pattern of actions against him. In the following days, he honored an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16. However, he was detained shortly after and transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on February 18.
Criticism of a National Daily Report
El-Rufai’s team also criticized a report published in a national daily (not The PUNCH) on April 18, titled “El-Rufai’s trial: Gunmen invade principal witness home.” The report quoted a witness, Mohammed Umar Karage, who alleged that gunmen attacked his residence. Karage suggested that the incident might be connected to his role in the ongoing trial and an attempt to silence him.
El-Rufai drew parallels between this situation and the disappearance of Kaduna-based activist, Abubakar Idris Dadiyata. However, he denied any involvement, calling the insinuations false and defamatory. The statement from his camp argued that the publication was intended to tarnish his image and weaken his bail application.
“Any objective reader would recognize the clear intent behind these statements: to tarnish his reputation and justify his continued detention,” the statement read. El-Rufai maintained his innocence and insisted he had no connection with the alleged attack.
Legal Action and Public Service Record
The former governor disclosed that his legal team had been instructed to initiate defamation proceedings against the newspaper. The statement further alleged that since 2023, El-Rufai had faced sustained “innuendos and vilification” despite his record in public service.
The statement warned against the weaponization of legal processes and called for adherence to the rule of law. It emphasized that El-Rufai should be granted full due process guaranteed by law to every citizen, and the persistent disregard for his rights must stop immediately.
Ongoing Challenges and Calls for Fairness
Throughout the ordeal, El-Rufai has remained steadfast in his denial of any wrongdoing. His legal team continues to work on defending his case and challenging the allegations made against him. The former governor’s supporters argue that the legal system should protect individuals from baseless accusations and ensure that justice is served fairly.
As the court date approaches, all eyes are on the Kaduna State High Court to see how it will handle the case. The outcome could have significant implications not only for El-Rufai but also for the broader discussion on the integrity of the legal process in Nigeria.
