Joseph Reagan Akena Triumphs in President’s Cup

Joseph Reagan Akena, a national team player, made a triumphant return to the par-71 Entebbe Club by securing the prestigious President’s Cup on Saturday. The event marked a significant milestone in his golfing career, as he emerged victorious in a thrilling match-play final against home member Samuel Bazaale. The final scoreline of 4-3 left fans on the edge of their seats, with Akena showcasing his resilience and skill under pressure.

“It’s good to be back winning here again,” Akena shared after the victory. “My semifinal showdown with Amon Bwambale was nerve-wracking for me, and I thought I wouldn’t win that game, but I am glad I am here with this win.”

This victory is particularly meaningful for Akena, who previously claimed his first major title as a teenager in 2024—the Uganda Open—on the same course where he now triumphed once more. His performance has set the stage for future success, both locally and internationally.

Looking Ahead: Ambitions and Goals

Akena is now focused on achieving more victories on the local amateur scene while simultaneously preparing for the US Amateur Championships in June. He is also working towards securing a university scholarship, which would further enhance his golfing journey and open new opportunities for growth.

The tournament featured 34 elite amateur golfers, with 16 players advancing through a rigorous qualifier. The prize fund for the men’s category stood at sh10 million, highlighting the competitive nature of the event.

In addition to the men’s competition, the Ladies category saw 13 participants, with 8 making it to the next stage. Toro Club’s lady captain, Peace Kabasweka, secured a commanding victory over Meron Kyomugisha from Kabale Sports Club, with a final score of 6 and 5. The ladies’ tournament had a prize fund of 3 million, reflecting the growing interest and support for women’s golf in Uganda.
